Critic Reviews

Roland R8 Rhythm Composer (SOS Feb 89)

muzines.co.uk

The Roland R8 Rhythm Composer is a powerhouse drum machine that excels in sound quality and versatility, offering 68 internal sounds with extensive modification capabilities. Its innovative 'Feel' function adds human-like expression to drum patterns, breaking the monotony of robotic beats. Despite a sleek design, the all-black buttons and hard-to-read lettering pose practical challenges. The external power supply's non-standard design could be a hassle if replacements are needed. While it might seem like overkill for those using it solely as a sound module, the R8's unique features ensure a flexible and expressive drumming experience. Overall, it sets a high standard in its class.

Review for sounds alone!

I run samples of this from drums into Groove Agent on Cubase pretty much exclusively. It's an Industrial powerhouse! Sounds like Ministry - me like!

redvoid

hard kicks with the 808 and 909 cards - tuned kicks will drop some serious bass

I have the Dance (909 and CR-78 sounds) and Electronic (808 sounds) PCM cards, and without them this thing would have been sold a long time ago. With them, I have little need for a TR-8 or most drum machines, and the CR-78 in tuned pad mode is the secret weapon of Miami Bass artists and breakbeat artists.

It's not analog, and it has menu diving, which is the reason for the 3 stars.

"Back then we had the multi-track tape, and we'd try to fit an album on one roll. We had a bit of tape left at the end of recording this album, so we multi-tracked a load of [Roland] R8 drum machines, where you can use the pitch slider, and basically did 24-tracks of pitch sliding the R8 on a load of random sounds- and that's what this track is."

"That sound is actually a Roland R8 drum machine. It's kind of neat, just taking the whistle and shaker sounds on the drum machine and doubling everything on the computer, so it's playing as many notes as it possibly can all of one sound."

May 28, 2019, Paul Woolford bares all for Resident Advisor:

The guy there was so patient with me. I'd go in and say, "Right, what can I get for £120?" Then he'd be like, "You can have this, that or that." One was a Yamaha CS-5, the other a BOSS DR-660 and the third bit would always be something a bit more expensive, which in this case was the Roland R-8. I ended up getting all three of those bits. And even to this day, I love them all. I didn't have the R-8 long, maybe two years, but I made loads of tunes on it. I had the CS-5 for 12 years. I put it in storage but it disappeared with a few other pieces a while back. I was gutted and I still think about that synth now. Need to get another.
