Critic Reviews

Roland TR-08 Rhythm Composer

soundonsound.com

The Roland Boutique TR-08 Rhythm Composer impresses with its authentic recreation of the iconic 808 sound, wrapped in a compact and portable package. Musicians will appreciate its modern features like USB audio capabilities and MIDI connectivity, enhancing both studio and live applications. While it retains the original's complex operation, making it a learning curve for newcomers, the TR-08 rewards perseverance with rich, dynamic sonic possibilities. Despite some limitations, like the lack of separate audio outputs and the need to stop playback to copy patterns, the TR-08 successfully modernizes a classic, making it a delightful choice for enthusiasts and professionals alike.

positive

Roland Boutique TR-08 review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

Roland's Boutique TR-08 is a commendable digital resurrection of the iconic TR-808, offering less noise and full digital capability via USB. Its front panel trigger is a standout feature, being separately programmable. However, the TR-08 falls short with limited sound editing and the need for additional drivers for multiple outputs. The inclusion of modern features like sub-step beats and random patterns is appreciated, but the absence of pre-configured sonic variants and a hefty price tag for a digital clone are notable drawbacks. Despite these issues, it's a solid choice for those seeking a compact 808 experience.

It's ok

It's bland and brittle. Imagine eating Mexican food made by folks who have only ever seen photos of Mexican food. This is like that.

The output is noisier than an analog drum machine. If this had individual analog outs I would like it a little better. I should sell it. I like the sequencer.

pkennethk

I take it you like the sound of the RD-8 much better?

mikefiction

I like the sound of the RD-8 a lot better. I like the workflow of the TR-08 better, though I am getting used to the RD-8. I did just think about if I could use the TR-08 as the sequencer for the RD-8, I should try that.

mikefiction

So I hooked up the TR-08 as the sequencer for the RD-8 via midi and it works great. So now I have the original 808 workflow back that I missed along with super close to 808 sound.

So I should revise my review, the TR-08 is a great 808 style drum sequencer.

pkennethk

if TR-08 didn't meet your expectations, no harm in giving it an honest review. There are enough breathless 4 and 5 star reviews on Equipboard already. Glad you're feeling the sequencer at least. cheers!
