Siemens W295B EQ — Description

The Siemens W295B is a vintage, solid-state analog 3-band equalizer first produced by Siemens (Sitral) in West Germany in the late 1960s / early 1970s.
It was originally used in high-end broadcast and studio equipment (e.g., Sitral modular consoles).
Its design is fully discrete transistor circuitry with transformer-balanced inputs and outputs, giving it a smooth, musical sound with low noise and distortion often described as silky highs and pleasant mids, comparable in vibe to classic American and British EQs despite its unique German character.
“Sweet” and forgiving EQ curves useful on vocals, acoustic instruments, drums, bass, and full mixes.
Compared by some engineers to classic American EQ flavors (e.g., GEQ/Pultec type smoothness), but very distinct in its own right.
This is not a modern shelving/parametric EQ it has stepped controls and discrete frequency choices typical of classic broadcast gear.
It’s very rare today and highly prized by engineers for tracking, mixing, and mastering when restored or adapted into rack gear.

Sound & Character:

• Silky, smooth high end • Musical mid-range shaping • Substantial low boost/cut

Specs:

• Analog, solid-state (discrete transistor) design (no digital processing).
• Transformer-balanced inputs and outputs for wide, musical frequency response and interfacing with pro gear.
• Class-A discrete electronics for smooth tonal behavior (less phase distortion).
• Originally designed for broadcast consoles subsequent use in studios as a custom rack EQ.
• Frequency: ~60 Hz
• Gain Range: ±15 dB in 3 dB steps
• Shelving type with stepped boost/cut.
• Frequency: ~18 kHz
• Gain Range: ±15 dB in 3 dB steps
• Smooth, musical high-end shaping.
• Fixed center frequency options:
• 0.7 kHz
• 1.0 kHz
• 1.5 kHz
• 2.3 kHz
• 3.5 kHz
• 5.6 kHz
• Gain Range: ±8 dB
• Bell-shaped mid-band with stepped frequency and gain.
• Inputs / Outputs: Typically via Tuchel or XLR connectors (balanced).
• Power: Older units commonly run mains power (e.g., 220 V) external PSU adaptations or custom rack power are common today.
• Bypass: Classic units can feature true bypass or relay bypass depending on how they’re rack-mounted or restored.
