Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Squier Vintage Modified Special Telecaster.

Mods and upgrades

  • The stock pickups are not hot enough for some; a Super Distortion T in the bridge enhances versatility from jazz to doom metal.

    Source
  • A 4-way switch can be installed to run pickups in both series and parallel modes, offering varied tonal options.

    Source
  • Seymour Duncan 'lil 59 humbucker is suggested for replacing the bridge pickup for those seeking a thicker sound.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Telecasters are noted for low-output electronics, not ideal for heavy sounds like "Cliffs of Dover"; consider a different model for such genres.

    Source
  • Parallel pickup wiring provides a crisper sound with less volume, suitable for clean and articulate playing styles.

    Source
  • The Vintage Modified Telecaster is praised for its versatility, with a humbucker in the neck suiting players seeking a broader range of tones.

    Source

Build quality

  • The guitar’s 70s style machine heads have top loading which may cause tuning instability, especially with .11 gauge strings.

    Source
  • Owners report the build quality of the Vintage Modified Telecaster is on par with the Classic Vibe series, despite being manufactured in different countries.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners love the neck but wish it had 22 frets; the neck rivals that of an Ibanez Sz720 in favorability.

    Source
  • The white pearl finish is reportedly more impressive in person, enhancing the guitar’s aesthetic appeal.

    Source
  • It's noted that both Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe models can be excellent players when properly set up, with individual guitars varying in quality.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Consider upgrading the nut and stock hardware, including the bridge and saddle, as these can significantly improve tone and playability.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The vintage-style split post tuners and brass saddles are appreciated for their aesthetic and functional appeal.

    Source
  • The Vintage Modified Telecaster's neck humbucker makes it appealing for those looking for a distinctive sound profile not found in traditional Telecasters.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Players find no significant difference in quality between the Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe, suggesting choice should be based on preferred configuration and feel.

Squier's Vintage Modified Telecaster Special is a quirky yet charming take on the classic Tele, offering excellent tonal versatility and a comfortable neck. While it sports a retro look and a Jazzmaster neck, the machine heads feel cheap. However, the guitar's diverse tones and solid build quality make it a standout choice for players seeking a blend of classic and modern features at an affordable price.

Excellent guitar. Someday, maybe upgrade the tuners, nut, and pickups. But for the price, this guitar will serve you very well.

This was around $400 used. No longer available pretty much anywhere. But this is such a cool guitar. The neck, first of all, feels fantastic It's a modern C, and it's got a nice finish. Both pickups sound great. Honestly, I prefer the bridge, but the P90 sounds so cool paired with some overdrive. The knobs are really good, much better than the Epiphone I had before this. All the electronics feel high quality. The tuners and nut are really good. The guitar is only ever slightly out of tune when I check it. But I wouldn't recommend putting 10s on it, at least not without a setup. I tried and it threw the treble strings way out of tune.
