Founded in Berlin in 1928 by Georg Neumann, the company introduced the CMV 3 — the first mass-produced condenser microphone — and went on to establish many of the standards by which studio microphones are judged. The U 47, introduced in 1949, became one of the most revered vocal microphones in recording history, used by Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, and countless others. The U 87, introduced in 1967, became arguably the most ubiquitous large-diaphragm condenser microphone in professional studios worldwide.
Neumann's microphone lineup spans large-diaphragm condensers like the U 87 Ai and TLM 103, small-diaphragm models like the KM 184, and specialized options for broadcast and live applications. Since 2010, the company has expanded into studio monitors with the KH series — building on the legacy of loudspeaker maker Klein + Hummel — as well as studio headphones (the NDH 20 and NDH 30) and the MT 48 audio interface, developed in collaboration with Merging Technologies.
Based in Berlin with manufacturing in Wedemark near Hanover, Neumann has been part of the Sennheiser Group since 1991. The brand's microphones remain a fixture in professional recording, broadcasting, and film production studios around the world.
Neumann has 143 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Condenser Microphones, Active & Passive Monitors, and Wireless Microphones. Their gear is featured by 903 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Electronic. Notable users include Norah Jones, Paul McCartney, and John Mayer. Most Neumann products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
