Reviews

PROS

  • Unique ability to create and save custom chords

  • Versatile with built-in FM for a loud output

  • Sensitive controls allow for precise tuning and sound shaping

  • Built-in effects like Warp, Twist, and Cross FM enhance sound modulation

  • Solid build quality with well-designed knob layout

  • Infinite creative possibilities with extensive functionality in a compact design

CONS

  • Tendency to produce dissonant drones unless carefully adjusted

  • Certain settings cause undesirable stereo behavior

  • Some wave modifiers impart non-musical distortion

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about 4ms Ensemble Oscillator Eurorack Module.

Features and functionality

  • Despite internal quantization, some users prefer an external quantizer for better tuning with other modules lacking this feature, ensuring cohesive integration.

    Source
  • The Ensemble Oscillator offers a "centroid" function via the "balance" control, facilitating harmonic lock tricks and diverse sound shaping, which the TelHarmonic lacks.

    Source
  • The Ensemble Oscillator is reported to excel at producing swampy, nasty bass and clean, ringing lead voices, although it requires careful knob tweaking.

    Source
  • The "frozen bass" setting allows separation of the root note from other oscillators, which can be creatively used for backing chord effects by utilizing clock divisions.

    Source
  • It is highly modulateable, with external modulation responding well, enhancing its versatility and dynamic capabilities.

    Source

Comparisons

  • While the TelHarmonic is praised for easy dub chords, the Ensemble Oscillator is favored for its ability to blur the lines between harmony and dissonance through simple knob adjustments.

    Source
  • Users find the TelHarmonic's noise output valuable for self-modulation and creating gnarly drones, a feature not similarly highlighted in the Ensemble Oscillator.

    Source
  • Compared to the QuBit Chord v2, the Ensemble Oscillator is better for soundscapes rather than predictable chord production, with the former being preferred for chord work.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners find the Ensemble Oscillator's root/pitch/spread relationship more intuitive than the TelHarmonic's degree and tonic inputs, enhancing ease of use in sound design.

    Source
  • Users recommend avoiding overuse of modulation parameters like "spread" and "balance" to prevent dissonance and maintain a controlled sound output.

    Source
  • Owners report that the Ensemble Oscillator requires significant setup to use effectively, often needing attenuation pre-modulation for optimal results.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Dropping the Ensemble Oscillator to two oscillators unlocks a wider variety of sounds, making it suitable for non-standard chordal textures.

    Source
  • Quick plucks with heavy FM modulation are effective, providing punchy sounds without prolonged harshness, while long chords benefit from careful reverb application.

    Source
  • The module excels at subtle drone applications, likened to a sitar effect, or organ sounds when using specific settings like "Twist" on pulsar and "Warp" on segment.

    Source
  • Employing shorter sequences into the root and longer ones into "pitch" can yield compelling results, especially when exploring different sequence inputs.

    Source
  • Best suited for creating ambient soundscapes, organ sounds, and dissonant soundscapes, but can also produce complex bass tones with adequate modulation.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Custom scales can be created for detuned voices, offering flexibility for a chorus effect rather than generating chords, enhancing subtle FM and warping control.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Effective use of the module involves filtering, with the Doepfer Wasp filter mentioned as particularly compatible with the harmonics it produces.

Critic Reviews

4MS Ensemble Oscillator

soundonsound.com

The 4ms Ensemble Oscillator is a groundbreaking Eurorack module that offers an impressive 16 sine wave voices, allowing for extensive sound design possibilities. It excels at creating lush, swirling textures with ease, making it both beginner-friendly and capable of deeper exploration. However, the inclusion of wave-shaping features like Twist and Warp may not resonate with everyone, as they can muddy the output rather than enhance it. While the module shines in its swirly charm and harmonic complexity, it leaves some users wishing for more CV control options. Overall, this module is a delightful tool for both instant gratification and serious sound experimentation, though it may not be perfect for every sonic palette.

4ms — Ensemble Oscillator [ENOSC] - Waveform Magazine

waveformmagazine.com

The 4ms Ensemble Oscillator showcases a captivating blend of intuitive design and deep sound exploration. With 16 oscillators, it easily shifts from smooth sine tones to intense FM sounds, inviting users to experiment with its rich harmonic quantization. The learning feature for custom scales adds remarkable flexibility, making it a powerful tool for sound sculpting. However, the quantization constraints in certain scale banks may limit creative freedom for some users. Overall, this module balances accessibility with complexity, encouraging adventurous sound design while maintaining musicality.

Amazing module

Not only you can play chords with it, but also create and save your own chords. It’s so versatile and since it has FM you can get loud too… I managed to play it ala Mile Davis’ Bitches Brew and it’s really spectacular.
