Good for low-gain tones at home

I bought this to have something quieter and simple to use at home, for when my larger amps were inappropriately loud but I didn't want to use headphones and modelling software. It fits that purpose. The tone is the most middle-of-the-road balance possible; neither 'American' nor 'British', or German, or anything else. It's totally in the middle of everything. The small speaker is extremely 'directional' and you need to be perfectly in line with it, ideally with it pointed straight at your head, or it sounds very muffled; do not expect this amp to fill the room with sound evenly because all of the treble is only projected directly forwards and nowhere else. The reverb also has limitations, as it distorts when pushed much beyond '4'. The power switching does work but as the speaker is so small and limited to begin with, and since the amp doesn't really get that crunchy when pushed, cutting the power mostly just results in a muddier volume drop; you may as well just set the master volume lower.

All that said, for low-gain basic clean(ish) tones at home with a hint of reverb at volumes that others in your house or building won't complain about, this works. It's functional, it's cheap, and the valve monitoring does seem to work correctly, easing maintenance. The tone is generic but that does mean it's flexible; the reverb sounds pretty good as long as you keep it below '4'. It's not a good amp per se, but it useful for quiet playing.

good value home use tube amp if a little dark sounding

got this to try to have a tube sound at a volume that it is possible to use at home. This has attenuators to 1W and 0.1. It is a generally dark sounding amp so have the tone maxxed at all times and this is compounded when using the attenuators so I tend to use on 5W at lower volume than cranked at 1W for that reason. It is usable but plays second fiddle to my solid state amps at home which have better tones at home volume

mod it... lower value coupling caps and cathode bypass caps in the preamp will brighten the tone substantially... easy fix if you can solder. Its vox ac4 based so you will find the coupling caps to be .057uf at probably 250v or more, change over to .022uf or lower (vox top boost ac30s go as low as 500pf, which si crazy small filtering off a tone of bass)… alternately the cathode bypass cap is likely the vox/fender 25uf 25v, this creates a shelf below its cutoff point, abss still apsses but at much lower gain. a 25uf your shelf starts at the bottom of the guitar's bass fundamental, fo below 10uf and shelve down some musical info, go below 1uf and you start to have a mid and treble boost of sorts, go .1uf and higher and you have a true treble boost. The small values are the hiwatt trick. Its probably 2 gains tages, I would do the second stage (2nd half of the preamp tube) the cathode will have a small resistor to bias it, probably 1 to 3k, in aprllel will be a 25uf electrolutic cap, unsolder it and replace it.On this amp I would look at the marshall value of .6 tos tart but possibly go as small as .022uf for a real treble boost. The little bypass caps will goos your overall gain down because tis cutting the low frequency gain, but this can be compensated with a larger palte resistor and/or smaller cathode resistor in parallel with the bypass cap. Have at it. This isn't rocket surgery. make sure to discharge the electrolytics first, even a 5 watt amp can hold lethal voltages for some time even when unplugged so make sure to shunt the power supply to chassis ground with an alligator clip wired to a high wattage flame proof 1k resistor to prevent sparking. Honestly, evne if you don't do that and the caps have a charge there's only about 6 volts max on a cathode so if you are good at the game operation you won't get electrocuted. Errr, I mean, don't try this yourself, tis unsafe... but if you do? cool! but umm don't, yeah, don't

Great amp to mod

Great price getting it used, upgraded the power tube and speaker for less then the price of getting one new. Sounds awesome

way better than their reputation. sounds muddy with the stock speaker, but with a jensen inside it brightens up and shows it's real potential. 6 years old and never had a problem.

Bang for your buck

The Bugera V5 was left to me when my grandfather passed. I love that its switchable from .1, 1, and 5 watts, making it a great practice amp, or you can get it to really push if you've got it on .1w and crank the gain.
