Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Nord Electro 3 61-Key Keyboard.

Features and functionality

  • The Nord Electro 3HP's fully weighted keys are ideal for piano-style play, whereas the semi-weighted keys on the 3 offer better organ playability.

    Source
  • The Nord Electro 3 includes a "Sample Synth" section but lacks a true synth engine, offering sample playback rather than full synthesis capabilities.

    Source
  • The Electro 3 is compatible with the Nord Sample Library 2.0, despite its limited memory which restricts the number of sounds loaded simultaneously.

    Source
  • D models have drawbars instead of buttons for organ manipulation, a preferred choice for those seeking tactile control during performances.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • In Europe, a Nord Electro 3 priced at 850 euros (~$920) is considered competitive, especially when newer models are not easily available at similar prices.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Nords tend to retain their value, but the Electro 3 can be priced similarly to a 5 on platforms like Reverb, indicating potential value concerns given its age.

    Source
  • Electro 4 models generally have about twice the memory capacity of the Electro 3, which could be a deciding factor for potential buyers.

    Source
  • Owners note that the Electro 3's semi-weighted keybed strikes a compromise between piano and synth/organ play, potentially too light for serious piano work.

    Source
  • Transitioning from SW (semi-weighted) to HP (hammer action) models is recommended for those prioritizing piano and electric piano performance quality.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The 61-key version of the Nord Electro 3 offers a balance between portability and functionality, suitable for live settings without frequent octave switching.

    Source
  • The Electro 3’s sample synth section is suitable for jazz and occasional electronic music, though owners note it lacks capabilities for true synth solos.

    Source
  • The 61-key Electro 3 is praised for its lightweight design and excellent control layout, making it a practical instrument for gigging musicians.

    Source
  • The Electro 3's keybed is considered too light for replicating the feel of a Wurlitzer, impacting its suitability for authentic electric piano work.

    Source

Build quality

  • Some units have bent knobs and cosmetic damage, which are common issues that do not typically affect functionality.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Older Nord models lack OLED screens, avoiding burn-in issues seen in newer models, reducing maintenance concerns related to display durability.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Older Nords, including the Electro 3, have limited internal memory and cannot utilize newer, advanced downloadable instruments from the Nord sound library.

Critic Reviews

Clavia Nord Electro 3

soundonsound.com

The Nord Electro 3 shines as a robust, versatile keyboard, excelling in delivering realistic organ sounds and a delightful assortment of electric pianos and samples. Its portability and user-replaceable sounds add to its appeal. However, its high price, limited audio outputs, and lack of adjustable keyboard velocity response might deter some. Despite these drawbacks, it remains a top pick for musicians seeking a gig-ready, all-in-one keyboard solution.

Nord Electro 3 review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

A classic reborn, the Nord Electro 3 impresses with its compact, portable build and incredible retro sounds. With a standout organ engine, realistic piano emulations, and versatile sample capabilities, it's a worthy successor to the Electro 2. The semi-weighted waterfall keyboard feels great, though it lacks the hammer-action option. The absence of a pitch/mod wheel and its monotimbral nature might deter synth enthusiasts, but the Electro 3 excels in delivering authentic, emotive tones. It might sit in the shadow of the Nord Stage, but for those prioritizing portability and sound quality, it's a stellar choice.

Electrifying

Got a really good deal on one of these and I could pass it up. It sounds amazing and the grand piano sound has been vastly improved from the Electro 2. Overall a great keyboard.

andris_gabor

One of my main songwriting tool.

I used to have a N ord Electro 2 but found this one in Hamburg for a great deal. This one has everything I need for songwriting, inspiration and for studio use.

gary_strag

Good, but not perfect

Have the 73 key Version, very good e-piano sounds, good organ sounds but too bad that you can't split or layer the sounds

My first electro

I got this to fill in the slot of my dying Hammond xk2

"The Nord Wave and Electro 3 have consistently been a huge hit in the studio every time I've brought them in and they've been fantastic tools for getting a vibe going during writing sessions. The Wave's sounds have been so inspirational that every time I come up with a new one it has always led directly to a new song being written there on the spot."
