"Selecting sounds is something that is very instinctive. I've been getting into the Waldorf Wave again recently. I've borrowed Björk's before and I've been using it again since we made Vespertine and I've been getting into designing some more sounds on that. I do still do a lot of pure sound‑design sessions where I'll put a day aside and work for an hour or two on the ARP 2600 or on the VCS3 with the tape running continuously."
On the first page of Chapter 7, in the book Prog Rock FAQ: All That's Left to Know About Rock's Most Progressive Music, it's stated that Pete Sinfield used the EMS VCS3 synthesizer.
Composer Hideki Matsutake confirmed the use of the EMS VCS 3, among other instruments, in creating music during a period when he had limited equipment. This information is sourced from an interview on STEREOKLANG titled "Interview with synth pioneer Hideki Matsutake – On YMO, Logic System, Modulars and beyond."

At the centre of Blancmange's sound over the last few years has been Stephen's Roland Jupiter 8, an instrument which he cherished and claimed to know inside out. His first excursion into the domain of electronic sound came some years before when he borrowed a VCS3. It turned out to be a good introduction: "The VCS 3 helps to understand how synthetic music works, because it has a matrix on it. You could see where one oscillator went through an envelope, then through a filter or whatever. And you could see why it did it and how it affected the sound." In spite of his mild disdain for digital synthesis ("I still don't like ultra squeaky clean things...") he has finally yielded to the times and switched to the JX8P.
Erik Norlander is confirmed to use the EMS VCS 3 synthesizer, as shown in a photo from the interview titled "The Ability to be Independent: An Interview with Erik Norlander."
In this video still from a Curved Air TV performance, Monkman is seen with a VCS 3 Mk 1 (and DK-1 keyboard).
Interview with Francis Monkman (Source: http://www.calyx-canterbury.fr/interviews/fmonkman.html ) "I was fortunate enough to have had the use of a VCS3 since 1969, when my flat-mate Robin Thompson (who was in "Intermodulation" with Andrew Powell & Co) got hold of one of the first. My experience with Moogs has not been so good -- I always thought the Minimoog far too limited after the VCS3, and even the big modular affairs fail to impress me, though it's true Keith E. got a monster sound out of his. I heard some good sounds out of a Polymoog, once, but I've no idea how they were programmed. The VCS3 did fine on the road, considering the inevitable tuning problems; after all this time, it still strikes me as a 'minor miracle', I even had mine refurbished and midied."
Francis Monkman interview from March 1983 edition of "Electronics and Music Maker" magazine (Source: http://www.muzines.co.uk/articles/francis-monkman/5930 ) "The first keyboard I started using in Curved Air was a Hohner piano, but by the second album I was using a VCS3 with the Cricklewood keyboard. The first album, 'Air Conditioning', also used the VCS3, but just for a few sweeps and effects, including a crazy violin solo through a ring modulator."
In an excellent and comprehensive article on the history and use of the VCS 3 here: https://musicaficionado.blog/2020/10/14/ems-vcs3-in-the-1970s-part-2/ they have an entry on Monkman's use of the VCS 3 in Curved Air:
We are lucky to have footage of the band playing live in the studio from a 1972 performance for the French TV. At the end of the set the band played their signature track Vivaldi, including a section of otherworldly sounds from the VCS3 with great close-ups of the instrument. "All original analogue synths of the period. EMS VCSIII, Yamaha YC45D organ, Roland SH-2000, Roland System 100M, Roland VP-330. Plus sampled Yamaha electric piano & small group of instrumentalists (percusssion, clarinet, bass clarinet, two horns, cello)."
Lists the synths he used for Shada.
