Guitarist Zane Carney bought his Fender Jerry Donahue Telecaster for $500 when he was around 13 years old. The guitar has been an essential part of his music ever since, whether it be with Carney (the band with his brother Reeve), on tour with the likes of John Mayer, or on his own solo efforts. The gutiar has been through some changes, including the placement (and subsequent replacement) of glow-in-the-dark fret markers on the side of the neck, which helped him see during his stint playing for the Broadway musical SpiderMan: Turn Off The Dark.

In 2004, Carney pulled the pickups that came with his Tele and started using a Kinman Broadcaster AVn-48 in the neck position and Kinman Telecaster AVn-60 in the bridge position.

Carney had his bridge saddles replaced by Matt Bruster at 30th St. Guitars in New York. Bruster makes a special set of Tele saddles that allow for the ‘barrel saddle’ tone with some special intonation compensation. “That’s why my bridge has those funky looking saddles,” says Carney.

“ I had Eric Chazz of Eric’s Guitar Shop in Los Angeles sand down the entire neck so I wouldn’t get stuck on the fretboard when the climate was humid,” says Carney. “My guitar looked like a Toys R Us prank gift for the first week but once I played it for a while the neck gathered its own character.”
