Vintage Bench Test: Gibson GA-5 Skylark

guitar.com

The Gibson GA-5 Skylark is a hidden gem from the late 50s and early 60s, offering a fantastic vintage tone at a fraction of the price of its Fender counterparts. While its compact design and simple controls are appealing, the Skylark is not without its quirks. The amp's components are prone to heat damage, and the dated circuitry can be challenging to repair. However, its creamy overdrive and lively response make it a favorite among studio musicians. Despite some drawbacks, the Skylark's rich, dynamic sound and affordability make it a compelling choice for vintage amp enthusiasts.

It Growles

Very Killer yet a bit too shrill, although many amp mods out there. I have the tremololess version. Hope to be getting together with my amp man in the future and I’m pretty sure it will be 5 star after a super minor tweak. One of many Gibson quality built Handwired Beauties from the 60’s. Dump in a good speaker and it’s an easy Grab and go jam amp.

Great value amps, esp from non-desirable years.

I have a 65 - great if you want a mustang, not the most popular year of these amps. Tremolo is amazing on these units.

the tweed oens and the weird shelf papery or 2 tone gnawgahide ones are the crème dela crème of ga5s but no trem ;-) find yourself a ga9, dual signle ended 10 watter, preferably in tweed and prepare to hear the real champ killer

Kravitz used a Skylark during the recording of "Are you gonna go my way", according to this Guitar World interview.

"...But on that song [“Are You Gonna Go My Way”] in particular I used a Gibson Skylark, a little tiny amp that has the most brilliant sound. And the guitar was a Les Paul—not the Flying V that’s in the video. Oddly enough, I’ve never used a V in the studio, even though I’m so associated with that guitar."

An old Ampeg Reverberocket that belongs to the studio. I always use it when I record there because I love it so much. There were also three little amps set up next to one another, and I also used a Gibson Skylark. But, aside from the Reverberocket, if it’s not my own gear, I don’t pay attention to equipment. Instead, I’m more focused on whether I like what I hear. There’s only so much space in the brain for tech things.
