IK Multimedia iRig Pre 2 Review

musictech.com

IK Multimedia's iRig Pre 2 is a solid choice for anyone looking to enhance their video sound quality on a budget. Its sturdy build and practical design, including a handy Velcro strap for secure attachment, make it a great tool for videographers. The true +48V phantom power is a standout feature, allowing for optimal performance with condenser mics. However, while the preamp offers a surprising amount of gain, higher settings introduce noticeable self-noise. Despite this, the iRig Pre 2's affordability, compatibility with various devices, and impressive battery life make it a valuable addition to any mobile recording setup. Just be prepared to manage the slightly awkward gain control layout and invest in a mic booster for quieter dynamic mics. Overall, it's an excellent entry-level investment for better audio recording on smartphones and cameras.

Simplest path from XLR to Aux in

I needed a portable solution to integrate an XLR mic into a battery-powered pedalboard. The iRig Pre 2 is an affordable solution for this case.

The iRig Pre 2 works with two batteries and can be used even with mics requiring phantom power.

The iRig allows me to connect the XLR mic into the aux in input of an amp sim pedal at the end of the pedalboard. In fact, both the main jack output and the headphone out of the iRig Pre 2 can be used to direct the mic audio to other devices, with independent volume controls.

The device is very compact, and audio quality seems good. However, the rubber-like plastic and the very light weight makes the construction and finish not to feel very solid.
