Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Solid State Logic SSL 2+.

Use cases and applications

  • Users mention that the dynamic range enhancement in the MKII may not effectively reduce room noise; directional microphones are recommended instead.

    Source
  • The SSL 2+ pairs well with the SM7B microphone, providing a natural human voice sound, although the preamps can be noisy at high gain levels.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Users encounter issues accessing the alternative 3-4 outputs on Linux systems, with only the main 1-2 outputs working reliably.

    Source
  • The SSL 2+ struggles with class-compliant latency on Linux, requiring a high buffer size for medium projects, unlike the MOTU M2 which performs better at lower buffer sizes.

    Source
  • Users report significant latency issues on Linux, with kernel versions needing specific patches for optimal performance, especially for implicit feedback synchronization.

    Source
  • It’s noted that the headphone input quality in the MKII is noticeably better than in the original version.

    Source
  • The SSL 2+ comes with valuable software and plugins, with users praising the vocal strip for reducing CPU usage compared to Slate VMR.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners note output noise when the DAC is active between 2 to 11 on the monitor knob, impacting audio clarity during use.

    Source
  • It's reported that SSL preamps aren't extraordinary, but the converters are considered better than many lower-priced interfaces, enhancing overall sound clarity.

    Source
  • Some users find the placement of inputs on the back of the SSL 2+ inconvenient, especially for guitar and headphone connections.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The SSL 2+ is a USB 2 device using a USB 3.1 connector, which some find misleading and contributes to higher latency compared to USB 3.1 devices like the MOTU M2.

    Source
  • The instrument input impedance of the SSL2+ is 1 MΩ, adjustable with the Hi-Z button, which is beneficial for guitar recordings.

    Source
  • The MKII version includes hardware loopback, which can be advantageous for streaming on older PCs, potentially reducing CPU/GPU usage compared to software loopback.

    Source
  • The SSL 2+ includes an extra headphone output, which can be crucial for collaborative work or dual monitoring setups.

    Source

Build quality

  • The SSL2 MKII maintains the same number of outputs as the original SSL2+, despite the updated features.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The SSL 2+ has a better headphone amp and provides 7dB more gain compared to the Steinberg UR22 mk1, which is a significant improvement.

    Source
  • The SSL2 MKII reportedly offers a slightly brighter sound, which some owners find appealing compared to the original SSL2+.

    Source
  • SSL 2+ owners notice improved sound quality over Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, with enhanced gain, dynamic range, and reduced noise in the preamps.

Critic Reviews

SSL 2+

soundonsound.com

SSL's 2+ audio interface delivers impressive sound quality and a user-friendly experience, making it a standout in the crowded market of budget interfaces. Its compact design and solid build quality add to its appeal, while features like dual headphone outputs and MIDI connectivity enhance versatility. However, the interface opts for unbalanced RCA outputs instead of quarter-inch jacks, which may not suit all studio setups. Additionally, the inability to disable input monitoring on certain outputs could be limiting for some users. Overall, the 2+ strikes a compelling balance of affordability and performance, solidifying SSL's reputation without compromising their legacy.

Reviewed: Solid State Logic SSL 2 and 2+ Audio Interfaces

mixdownmag.com.au

The Solid State Logic SSL 2+ delivers exceptional audio quality and robust build, packing professional features into a compact interface. Its standout 4K button adds rich harmonic distortion, enhancing recordings significantly. However, the interface's output options could use improvement, as unbalanced outputs and a lack of a switching feature may limit some users. Despite minor quirks like a quieter input side and the need for higher volume levels during monitoring, the SSL 2+ impresses with its low latency and quality preamps, making it an excellent investment for home studios. For those willing to spend a bit more, this interface proves to be a top contender in its class.

SSL 2 and 2+ | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Solid State Logic SSL 2+ offers an impressive blend of professional sound quality and build at a budget-friendly price. Its stellar monitoring capabilities and the 'Legacy 4K' button add a nice touch, though the latter may not dramatically transform your recordings. While the RCA outputs might deter some users, the overall sturdy construction and clarity of sound make it a compelling choice for both beginners and seasoned musicians. Its competitive pricing in a crowded market solidifies its place as a serious contender, especially for those seeking an affordable taste of the SSL legacy.

Excellent

I bought it a couple of weeks ago, it's simply spectacular. The quality of its materials in relation to its price is very good, the quality and fidelity of its preamps are unsurpassed; the 4k option that emulates the sound provided by an ssl 4000 analog console, gives the sound warmth and that characteristic boost of analog sound. In general terms, the price-benefit ratio is quite high.

Decent value, not spectacular

I cannot share another reviewers impression of this soundcard. I found it too underpowered to get a decent level out of my Sennheiser HD600 headphones. It does have a polished sound, but when I a/b'd it against an old Mackie Onyx 1620 Firewire Mixer/ soundcard, it lost by some margin. I took my Mackie off of eBay & gave this one away... I'm trying to convince my studio buddy (who I gave this to) to ditch it & use something older with a MUCH better DAC. The SSL2/SSL 2+ might be suitable for podcasts, but for pro audio (as fas as I'm concerned) this one's all hype.

Preordered

I have ordered this product for its numerous benefits. Extremely high quality in both the audio and the build, with all ports on the back. Looks amazing and matches my setup better since there is nothing sticking out of the front over the piano keys.

Though basic, an affordable and very powerful audio interface

The SSL2+ is a basic (2-in, 2-out), affordable powerhouse which I use to record my instruments and voice. It also have MIDI in/out and 2x headphone outputs with individual blend and level controls. Unit is solid and well-built. Knobs and buttons feel good. Highly recommend this beast!

Great interface

Great interface with professional preamps. It can power a Sm7b without cloudlifter.

pkennethk

Without a Cloudlifter? Seriously? My Mackie 1640i can barely handle an SM7b even with the Cloudlifter.

Great product

Fantastic control surface, the knobs feel tight and good quality. Especially the preamps are the best among many other interfaces of this price I've tried.
