Description
Inspired by the iconic 1973 MK3 Silver/Orange "Onomatopoeia" Tone Bender, the JHS Legends of Fuzz Series Bender brings vintage fuzz magic to your pedalboard. This pedal is a tribute to the tone that defined the rock 'n' roll of the 60s and 70s, loved by legends such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Jeff Beck.
The JHS Bender carefully replicates the original’s sonic characteristics using modern silicon transistors, making it a more consistent and dependable version of the vintage germanium fuzz. It offers a wide spectrum of fuzz tones, from middle of the road crunch distortion to full-out aggression, making it a flexible addition to your gear.
This pedal features Volume, Tone, and Attack controls for precise sound shaping. The Volume control adjusts the output level, while the Tone control lets you sweep between bright and dark tones, allowing the Bender to work well with a range of different amplifiers and guitars. The Attack control adjusts the distortion level, creating more fuzz as you turn it clockwise.
A unique feature of the Bender is the side "Mode" button, which allows you to access the "JHS Mode." This mode provides more gain and a mid-frequency boost, perfect for making your leads soar through the mix.

Source -
Pairing the Bender with a tube screamer or Morning Glory can enhance its sound palette, offering light fuzz to heavier sludge tones depending on gain and EQ settings.

Comparisons
-
The 3 Series Fuzz is noted for a variety of textures due to its bias control, while the Bender offers a universally pleasing fuzz sound.
Source -
The Bender, modeled after a MKIII Tone Bender, uses silicon transistors, differentiating it from traditional germanium-based circuits and affecting its tonal characteristics and placement flexibility.
Source
User experience
-
Some users found neither the 3 Series Fuzz nor the Bender satisfactory, preferring the sound of a NY Series Big Muff instead.

Features and functionality
-
The JHS Bender's silicon transistors allow it to work effectively in various signal chain positions, unlike traditional germanium tonebenders that typically demand a first-position setup.
Source -
The JHS Bender's fuzz effect relies heavily on input volume; turning the guitar volume up maximizes fuzz effects, contrary to using it as a primary volume control.

Thought this was the fuzz of my dreams...
So I caved. I thought my fuzzbox days were over.
I looked back on my history - Vox Trike, Way Huge Russian Pickle, Maestro FuzzTone reissue - and thought: "Dammit. I need a fuzz pedal and all of those didn't fit the bill."
Until I discovered the Tone Bender. I was amazed. This was exactly the sort of sound I wanted - controllable, but nasty enough to really get that vintage fuzz sound. When I picked this thing up from my local music shop, I was informed that JHS had just went out of stock of them. Which means this must be the fuzz pedal for me.
[EDIT: Turns out they're still being made - I guess I was getting the last of a batch of them! Silly me...]
I love the vintage form factor...but having the pots at the top of the enclosure is annoying, to say the least. Shouldn't be too much of an issue, since apparently there are markers on the knobs to show where "noon" is.
Can't wait to incorporate this into my board! And if you want one, you may have to scramble before the stocks run out!
EDIT 4/29/26: I have gotten rid of this thing a long time ago. I seem to be cursed - I can't get a single fuzz pedal I've ever owned ever to sound good to my ears. I don't know why. Since I wasn't able to dial it in and the fact that I do not own it anymore, I dinged it a star. Your mileage may vary.

At 2:35 in this video interview with Sweetwater, Rabea says:
Out of that [Boss OC-5] we go in to the 1973 Bender Fuzz by JHS. They released a series of fuzz, I believe they were called the Legendary Fuzz Series I think a little while back. They did four, and the Bender was the one I enjoyed the most.
He goes on to explain that he likes fuzz pedals inspired by vintage units but updated to include modern features and specifications.
In this reverb promotional video, we can see Joshua's pedalboard at 2:10 which features the JHS Legends of Fuzz Series Bender
