Owner Insights

Comparisons

  • AV40s outperform Logitech/Creative speakers in clarity, serving as an introduction to the world of studio monitors.

    Source
  • The successor model, AV32, reportedly runs cooler than the AV30/AV40, suggesting improvements in heat management and overall design in newer models.

    Source
  • Outperforms similarly priced 2.1 systems in clarity and soundstage, despite bass limitations.

    Source

Other

  • The use of a thin sheet metal bracket inside the speaker acts as EMI/EMC shielding and is essential for preventing 60Hz hum, contrary to its seemingly unnecessary appearance.

    Source
  • Pronounced soundstage and detail, but lacks deep bass; excels with voices and acoustic recordings.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners have successfully repaired AV40s over 14 years old, highlighting their longevity when maintained properly with part replacements.

    Source
  • Owners note that while bass seems exaggerated, it's relatively neutral compared to other entry-level monitors, though it lacks real-world bass below 80-85 Hz.

    Source
  • Noted channel imbalance at low volumes, left speaker quieter; common in budget monitors due to potentiometer design.

    Source

Build quality

  • Internal components such as C47 and C48 often show signs of thermal damage, like bloating and discoloration, indicating potential longevity issues with these capacitors.

    Source
  • Left speaker houses the amplifiers and connections; cable is short, favoring desktop setups but limits wider placements.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Some users suggest using a CPU heat sink to manage heat dissipation, which helps prolong the speaker’s lifespan by reducing thermal stress.

    Source
  • Adding a series resistor to the potentiometer can address channel imbalance at low volumes.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Common issue with left speaker being quieter can be resolved by replacing capacitors C12 and C13, which may appear undamaged but are crucial for restoring volume balance.

    Source
  • Placement at ear height crucial due to directional tweeters, 20 cm stands recommended for optimal sound.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Despite being an entry-level monitor, they are forgiving of low-quality sources, offering surprising clarity from devices like an Android-powered phone.

    Source
  • Excels in genres like hip-hop, rap, and electronica due to its impactful bass, making them suitable for casual listening rather than critical mixing.

    Source
  • Ideal for near-field listening, particularly in home studio setups; not forgiving of poor recordings.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The 4" polypropylene woofer and 1" silk dome tweeter combine for a lively sound with nice contrast between lows and highs, particularly in classical music.

    Source
  • The AV40's built-in amp reaches 101.5 dB/1m, contributing to a dynamic and punchy sound, especially for its size.

    Source
  • Volume control LED glows blue, which some find distracting; potential mod is disconnecting or replacing the LED.

M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 Speakers Review - Videomaker

videomaker.com

M-Audio's Studiophile AV 40 speakers are a delight for desktop use, offering smooth, clear sound with silk dome tweeters avoiding harshness. The inclusion of front panel inputs and a headphone jack adds convenience. However, at 14 pounds, they aren't the most portable option, and their $200 price tag might be steep for some. Despite these minor drawbacks, they deliver excellent audio quality, making them a solid investment for those seeking immersive sound in a compact package.

The M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 studio monitors impress with their clean, natural sound and strong frequency response, making them a standout choice for musicians seeking affordable quality. Priced at €109, they offer robust performance across various music genres without the need for a subwoofer. However, their plain design and inconveniently placed rear power switch might deter some. Despite lacking sound equalization, their built-in power supply and front-side inputs add convenience. Overall, these monitors are a great value for desktop audio, especially for those prioritizing sound over aesthetics.

Bang for the buck monitors!

If you're just scraping by with not too much cash, these babies will get you started for a measly £80! They have a nice flat frequency response range while providing a good all-round sound monitoring quality. Making sure these monitors are placed properly and providing the space is somewhat acoustically treated will definitely improve the clarity of the bass frequencies, otherwise it can get pretty muddy very easily. I will soon be replacing these for something more advanced and of higher quality, but for now they work a treat!

For first monitors, these are wonderful and serve as my main speakers for everything I do except when I'm actually monitoring my music, which I use headphones for. I don't have a very real studio setup and would rather have yamaha monitors but for as cheap as these are they sound better than your run of the mil stereo speaker setup.
