Best Speaker (for my ears)
Ever since the 1970's the iconic white woofer and signature sound of Yamaha's nearfield reference monitors have become a genuine industry standard for a reason - their accuracy. Unlike studio monitors with added bass or treble frequencies which may sound more flattering at first, HS Series speakers were designed to give you the most honest, precise reference possible, providing an ideal sonic platform to build on throughout the mixing process. By combining acquired knowledge and expertise with state-of-the-art sound technologies, Yamaha's speaker engineering team have examined, then optimized, every aspect that has contributed to making these monitors the most trusted in the business. The HS5 is the smallest of the series, and features a 5" cone woofer and 1" dome tweeter that's just the right size for smaller home studios.
High-performance Speakers and Mounting System
The elegant white-cone speakers used in the HS-series monitors deliver superlative audio performance that is further enhanced by a carefully engineered mounting system. A system of screws and a specially designed mounting ring eliminates spurious vibration and resonance, allowing the speaker to deliver its full sonic potential. Another feature that boosts woofer performance is a magnet selected to produce accurate, solid low-end response. The tweeter frames employ an advanced smooth-contour design that minimizes losses so that high-frequency details come through with remarkable accuracy. The extra thickness of the tweeter frame also minimizes resonance that can interfere with high-end clarity. The overall result is extraordinarily smooth, accurate response throughout the audio spectrum.
The Benefits of Built-in Power and Bi-amplification
Powered, bi-amplified monitor speakers simply make the most electrical and sonic sense, and that's why they have become the first choice of sound professionals the world over for near- and mid-field monitoring applications. In addition to the obvious advantage that you don't need separate power amplifiers, the fact that power and speakers are integrated in one unit means that the amplifiers can be perfectly matched to the characteristics of the speaker units used so you get consistently superior performance with any source in just about any listening environment. Bi-amplification means that separate power amplifiers are used to drive the low-mid and high-frequency speaker units, and this eliminates interaction between the units as well as the response and phase anomalies introduced by passive crossover networks. Both speaker units can function at optimum performance levels for correspondingly high overall sonic quality.
Large Magnets in an Advanced Magnetic Circuit Design
One feature of the HS-series monitors that you'll hear but are not likely to see is the extra large magnets. In combination with an advanced magnetic circuit design these magnets provide a powerful, uniform, tightly controlled flux field that results in exceptionally smooth response and dynamic capability over a wider frequency range.
Portable, Versatile Monitoring for Your Audio Workstation
All you really need for top-class stereo production capability is a good audio workstation and a pair of HS-series monitors. A system like this is not only portable and extremely easy to set up anywhere you need it, it can deliver outstanding monitoring performance that will let you get your mixes just right. The response-control features of these monitors let you tweak them for the best response no matter where you set them up.
Serious Surround Production
Although stereo is still the most common format for basic music listening, 5.1 surround has become the audio format of choice for today's advanced visual media, and is beginning to be recognized as a superior vehicle for pure musical enjoyment as well. But to properly mix and produce surround sound you need a good 5.1 monitoring system. The HS-series speakers and subwoofer are the perfect choice if you want competitive surround-monitoring performance without having to spend big-studio megabucks to get it.
Optimum Response In Any Room
Speaker response can vary greatly depending on the size, shape, and surface acoustics of the room in which they're used, as well as how they're placed within that environment. The HS5 gives you extra room-matching and speaker placement versatility with ROOM CONTROL, MID EQ, and HIGH TRIM response control switches that are specifically designed to compensate for common acoustic deficiencies and monitoring needs. The ROOM CONTROL switch, for example, can be used to compensate for the unnatural low-end exaggeration that usually occurs when speakers are placed close to walls or in corners. The MID EQ switch gives you subtle midrange boost and cut options in addition to flat response, while the HIGH TRIM switch offer the same type of response-tailoring capability for the high frequencies.
Great flat-response monitors for a smaller bedroom studio. I love the way they look with my setup and they maintain an authentic flat sound even in a room with poor acoustics.
As a hobbyist bedroom producer, it is important to get very decent speakers at an affordable price. These will do more than just that. They give a very nice, clean sound in the highs and mids. However they do not register under 50hz which is pretty good in my book as it doesn't really concern me dealing with anything under that frequency mark. As a starting off point of upgrading your equipment, this is the real deal. The Room Control function is great cause unfortunately my room is pretty small so I'm nearly up against the wall, because of that it delivers more bass response which it isn't what you want. You want it to deliver true sound. So I use the room control to compensate for the bass. If you want more bass you'd have to get the Yamaha HS8S which is a subwoofer. Overall a 9/10 I love these, both producing wise and for just playing music in general.
No! im not gonna talk about how this series reminds us the NS-10 Speakers!! lol i tried hs-80 in couple years ago , but im switching to this 5`inch speakers, and because its better for my room :)
We use almost three years. Great speakers for bedroom studios. MID frequencies are very nice and the speakers have almost flat response. But we would like more power in the lows. Everybody should consider buying a sub with this speakers.
For the price, these are the best near-field monitors in my opinion. They don't exaggerate certain frequencies (like the low end with KRK's), and very good response. Probably the most neutral sounding monitor you will find for below $600/pair at retail. My only concern is that they are ported in the back, so placing them right against a wall may increase the sound of the lower frequencies. However, there are settings in order to accommodate to this, but you can only adjust the low-end from 0db to 02db, so I wish there was an option for more fine tuning. But once you have them set up right and positioned correctly, they are awesome!
If you have a small studio space, you cannot go wrong with the Yamaha HS5's! The sound coming out the monitor is nice and flat. Since they are the 5" monitor's you will get less bass response as opposed to the 8" monitors. This isn't a problem once you get accustomed to them. If you really need the extra bass you can pick up the Yamaha HS10 sub woofer or simply pick up the HS8'S.
Maybe too nice. As you expect with small ported monitors you can't judge your bass very well. Also I feel they are tiny bit bright a bit less than KRK and Genlecs but still brighter than optimal.
Absolutely love these. They're super easy to use and they are really powerful for being so small. Definitely a great buy if you're new to the game, nothing will help you more than having some good monitors. The only trouble I have with mine is that they seem to be extremely sensitive, so whenever I leave my computer on and the screen goes black, my audio interface will power down causing my monitors to make the horrid popping sound. Other than that, 10/10
