Martin D12-35 50th Anniversary Review - One Man's Guitar

onemanz.com

The Martin D12-35 50th Anniversary is a triumphant nod to its 1965 predecessor, blending vintage charm with modern enhancements. Praised for its powerful sound, the 12-fret dreadnought design and VTS-treated European spruce top offer a lush, harmonious tone. The updated neck profile makes it more comfortable than the original, facilitating intricate playability. While it lacks the full fret access of later models, the trade-off is a rich, resonant sound that's hard to beat. Celebrating Martin's legacy with refined aesthetics and build, it's a must-have for 12-string enthusiasts seeking a blend of history and innovation.

Martin D12-35 50th Anniversary - Peghead Nation

pegheadnation.com

Martin’s D12-35 50th Anniversary 12-string is a masterful blend of vintage appeal and modern playability. The guitar's solid build, featuring top-quality materials and contemporary enhancements like a solid headstock and updated neck profile, ensures it’s a player’s dream rather than just a collector’s item. Martin’s Vintage Tone System adds a mature resonance, while low action and precise fretwork make it effortless to play, even in standard tuning. The rich, voluminous sound with ample jangle is a delight, and the well-spaced strings accommodate comfortable fingerpicking. However, its limited availability of just 183 units may disappoint potential buyers. Overall, this guitar is a testament to Martin’s commitment to innovation while honoring its storied past.

In this article on the Martin museum on Martins website, you can see that in one of the museum cases is a D12-35 played by Judy. From the article: “Earlier in her career, Judy Collins was very fond of the D-18. In fact, she even played one at the open house for Martin’s new Sycamore Street factory when it opened in 1964. Eventually, her focus shifted toward Martin 12-string models, mostly the D12-35, and this model became the guitar she was most associated with. When Martin decided to honor Collins with her own signature edition models, it was both 6- and 12-string Style 35 Dreadnoughts they chose. This model was owned by Collins for nearly 40 years before Martin Guitar acquired it for their museum collection.“
