Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Keeley Compressor Pro.

Features and functionality

  • The Keeley Compressor Pro's design allows it to be used effectively before or after overdrive pedals to manage dynamics and maintain tonal clarity.

    Source
  • The Keeley Compressor Pro is noted to overly compress guitar signals, leading to a loss of dynamics, which can be problematic in live settings.

    Source
  • The Keeley Compressor Pro includes an auto mode for attack/release, useful for an always-on starting point, but manual adjustments may be needed for transient control.

    Source
  • The Keeley Compressor Pro can be used to "slam" the input of an amp by cranking the gain past unity, enhancing clarity and dynamics.

    Source
  • A gain reduction meter is highly desired by users for easier visual monitoring of compression levels.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Known for producing a "country" sound, the Keeley Compressor Pro is less favored for genres requiring subtle, transparent compression.

    Source
  • Users find the Keeley Compressor Pro effective for both clean and distortion tones, smoothing out overdriven chords and leveling signals for rhythm guitar.

    Source
  • Positioned right after the Euna and Tuner, it enhances clarity and sweetens the tone, especially effective when used as a pre-dirt sweetener.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners note a persistent whine when using the Keeley Compressor Pro, which may be attributed to non-isolated power supplies.

    Source
  • Users report a significant volume boost when engaging the Keeley Compressor Pro, especially noticeable when used incorrectly in the signal chain.

    Source
  • Some users initially find the pedal complex but recommend adjusting settings based on personal sound preferences rather than generalized advice.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Wampler Ego is highlighted as a superior alternative for maintaining low end in drop tunings, preferred over the Keeley for its tonal balance.

    Source
  • The Strymon Compadre is favored for its dual functionality, offering both studio and classic pedal compression, appealing to those seeking versatility in sound shaping.

    Source
  • The Keeley Compressor Pro is likened to an IC compressor, offering a squashed and snappy sound ideal for single coil pickups, whereas the optical Diamond Comp lifts tones, better for humbuckers.

    Source
  • The Keeley Compressor Pro is described as a limiting style compressor, suitable for maintaining a clean, silent compression without altering tone significantly, unlike the more tonal Diamond Comp.

    Source
  • Consideration is given to switching to the Cali 76 Compact for potentially different tonal characteristics.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Lollar P90 pickups are recommended for those experiencing a muddy tone with stock Gibson P90s, providing a clearer, more defined sound.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Users suggest setting the threshold control so the LED indicator engages on every pick attack, even with lighter touches, for consistent compression.

Not Impressed

I was really excited about getting this compressor, but the build quality was bad. @ $299, it would have been the most expensive pedal I've ever bought. So bad, I ended up sending it back which was a serious downer. Sound wise, the Keeley was good out of the gate, but I was also getting a lot of clipping and stutter so really not happy with audio quality either. All said and done, I could kick myself for not following my original inclination with an Xotic SP. Keeley's sexy newness, simply failed in its promise. ~m

not so pro, huh?

raucusbacchus

Pro-no. Fired her before she even got warmed up. I tell you what, I don't get the box opening fad, but I bet the look on my face would have certainly drawn a laugh from the sadist crowd when I saw the state of things. I'll just have to keep shopping. ~m

"The Comp Pro holds a sincerely large part of the equity of the tone that I hear in my head. I don’t see any board in my near future not having one. The Compressor plus is similar in essence, just more compact, yet still as effective! These two pedals will indeed prove that any style, taste, genre that applies to the guitar; the sound and tonal aid offered from these pedals can apply to all. I love them."
