A Stellar Ambient Tool
When we first saw the Old Blood Noise Endeavors Dark Star, we thought it might just be another reverb pedal trying to carve its niche. However, this pedal quickly proved us wrong.
Our initial impressions were immediately positive; the Dark Star is solidly built and the knobs feel fantastic to tweak. Diving into the controls, the Dark Star shines with its multiple modes—Delay, Bit Crush, and Pitch. These modes offer a wide array of tonal possibilities, particularly for ambient music. We found the ability to create unique and atmospheric sounds to be one of the pedal's strongest suits. However, the mix knob was a bit of a letdown, as it didn’t adjust the dry signal volume as we expected.
Sound-wise, the Dark Star is an absolute gem for ambient and atmospheric noise enthusiasts. It produces rich, expansive sounds that can transform any simple riff into a sonic landscape. We particularly loved it on a 100% wet setting. On the downside, we found the octave-up effect to sound somewhat unnatural.
The Dark Star is perfect for musicians looking to explore the realms of ambient and atmospheric soundscapes. However, those who prioritize a more traditional reverb experience might want to look elsewhere.

Compared to Walrus Audio Slöer, the Dark Star V3 provides a more textured and nuanced path to creating ambient soundscapes, akin to exploring a mysterious forest.

Some users find dialing in +1 and -1 octaves challenging due to their narrow window range on the knob.
Source -
Owners report that the pink colorway of the pedal offers improved visibility for control fonts, enhancing usability during performances.
Source -
Some owners report a love-hate relationship due to the lack of reverb tails, affecting the pedal's seamless integration in a chain.

Features and functionality

The Stereo model enables simultaneous use of all three V2 modes by providing individual knobs for pitch, crush, and feedback.
Source -
The addition of a filter knob in the Stereo version is crucial for tone shaping, especially when managing high-pitched +2 octave sounds.
Source -
The Stereo version introduces a Lag knob, allowing reverb onset control from instantaneous to a 1-second delay, providing significant sound crafting flexibility.
Source -
The Dark Star's Crush mode controls upper and lower octaves with a bit crush, providing unique ambient effects not found in standard reverbs.
Source -
Users find the V3 version capable of producing both extreme and subtle effects, aided by adjustable decay and mix knobs for a more standard reverb sound.
Source -
The V3 version now includes stereo capabilities, a distortion addition, and quantized pitch mode, enhancing its versatility for sound exploration.
Source -
The pedal's Delay mode can create wild oscillations with high feedback, though some users find it less impactful without adjustments.

Fun Pedal
I use this in the send/return of my Superego pedal, to add some evolving and self-oscillating textures to the frozen chord I start some songs with.

' just got the DigiTech FreqOut pedal which is this natural feedback creator. So I have that dialled all the way wet, so there’s no dry signal and then I process that through the Dark Star reverb. It’s a reverb with bitcrusher in it so it adds texture. I like it because it’s a kind of an otherworldly sound.'
