Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3.

Use cases and applications

  • The Afterneath V3 excels in producing massive reverbs with a "big damp cave" sound, particularly when used with the drag and mix knobs adjusted for space and texture.

    Source
  • The module includes a dry kill switch, useful for creating pad sounds without needing to set the mix to 100% wet.

    Source
  • Ideal for ambient/shoegaze styles, the Afterneath V3 creates shimmery, glitchy repeats, making it suitable for experimental soundscapes.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Users compare the Afterneath module to the Disting EX, citing less clipping in the latter's reverb algorithm.

    Source
  • The Neunaber Immerse MKII offers similar ambient capabilities with more modes, including effective plate, hall, and shimmer settings, potentially replacing the Afterneath V3 for some users.

    Source
  • The Walrus Slo is described as more dreamy and modulated, in contrast to the darker, shimmery sound of the Afterneath V3.

    Source
  • The Afterneath V3 is likened to a synth pad style reverb, distinct from the OBNE Dark Star but with similar ambient/shoegaze capabilities.

    Source

User experience

  • Some users find the Drag CV modulation only sounds good with minimal modulation and when clocked or synched.

    Source
  • Some owners integrate expression sliders or rampers for real-time adjustments, enhancing the pedal's tweakability during live performances.

    Source

Build quality

  • The dry kill switch mechanism utilizes a basic spring similar to a pencil clicker, which can become unreliable over time.

    Source
  • The mode LED is described as excessively bright, often requiring users to cover it with tape to reduce glare.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Lack of CV control for Dampen or Reflect is noted as a limitation, impacting modulation options for these parameters.

    Source
  • The Afterneath module's input can clip, especially at levels above 50%, requiring careful input level management for optimal sound.

    Source
  • The Afterneath V3 allows cycling between modes like quantized, unquantized, octave, major, and minor scales, offering a unique reverb experience.

    Source
  • Users find it possible to achieve room or hall reverb sounds by setting knobs leftward, though it lacks spring reverb characteristics.

    Source
  • The Afterneath's design stacks delay trails, providing a distinctive effect that feels unique compared to traditional reverb pedals.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Adding an OBNE Expression Slider allows for seamless transitions between normal and modulated reverb sounds, maximizing the Afterneath's versatility.

EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3 Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3 is a sonic playground that invites experimentation, boasting an impressive range of controls that yield deeply resonant and ethereal reverbs. While it excels in creating lush, ambient soundscapes, the pedal’s tendency towards octave-forward "shimmer" effects may not suit all players. Those seeking straightforward reverb might find the learning curve steep, but for adventurous musicians, it offers a wealth of creative possibilities. Ultimately, the Afterneath V3 is a powerful tool for those looking to push their musical boundaries.

Review: EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3

guitar.com

EarthQuaker Devices' Afterneath V3 offers a fresh take on ambient soundscapes with its innovative features like a rotary mode switch and expression pedal input. This reverb pedal doubles as a delay, producing lush, ethereal sounds that can be manipulated for unique effects. However, the pedal's unconventional nature may not appeal to everyone, and background hiss can become noticeable at higher wet mix levels. While its core sound is captivating, the added complexity and potential for oddball effects might leave some users scratching their heads. Overall, it’s a versatile tool for adventurous musicians, but those seeking straightforward reverb may find it a tad perplexing.

A quintessential ambient reverb

Cavernous, cold and pristine is how I would describe this pedal. The cover art really does it justice.

Despite having 6 knobs and a mode selector, this is a surprisingly simple pedal once you familiarize yourself with the controls. Another reason why it’s relatively simple to operate is because it’s kind of a one trick pony, because no matter what adjustments you come up with, the sonic character is still the same. The only way you can make it sound weird and really unique is with an expression pedal or specially something like an expression ramper. Speaking of expression rampers, using the OBNE expression ramper you can set up a triangle wave, put the drag at the minimum setting and use the unquantized modes (the first 3 modes) for a modulated vibrato sound kinda similar to the dream setting on the Walrus Slö. Alternatively you can use it with the other quantized modes for a sequencer like, glitchy sound which is the most experimental you can get with this pedal.

All in all, It’s a beautiful one trick pony, and because it’s a relatively simple (but curiously unique) pedal, it can be more versatile than you might think but its uses are relegated to ambient, shoegaze and more experimental genres, it’s not gonna work as an always on reverb and it’s definitely not gonna be your workhorse reverb. Overall, I really dig this pedal. It might not do a lot but what it does, it does mesmerizingly good.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Run in before dirt for some ethereal a la Godspeed You! Black Emperor. After dirt for ambient and huge washes of ice cold reverb.

This reverb can get pretty bright so be generous with the dampen control. I strongly recommend getting an OBNE expression ramper to really unlock all the potential of this pedal.

A Godsend for reverb freaks

Reverb is my favorite effect, and at times I want something that pushes all boundaries of good sense. In the past I had to chain several digital effects units together with cranked hall settings to get anything approaching what this pedal does in a Boss-sized footprint.

Like all Earthquaker pedals, it can be a bit cantankerous and unpredictable, but if you like borderline infinite reverb trails, this is the gold standard. Definitely not an always on background reverb; this is as in your face as it gets, and I can’t live without it.

Just got it but I absolutely love it. Inspiration machine.

This pedal is just cool and unique. I've been inspired since I heard it in a demo and as soon as it arrived, I wrote a song right away. This thing is sick. Might be my favorite reverb pedal ever.

Favorite Reverb Pedal

I've got a CME Exclusive version of this pedal with a red/black color scheme, its super unique. Maybe one of the best reverbs in the game right now, it's got simple reverb, but you can go all the way up to cavernous, mystical reverb sounds.

Stunning reverb pedal

Sound of Afterneath V3 is sooo beautiful. I give 5 stars only this sound. In addition, you can change really easily toggle switch as usual pedals or momentarily switch. It also has knob for change reverb modulation harmonics mode and input port for expression pedal.

“EarthQuaker effects are a creators’ pedal company, the nuance and attention to detail really puts you in control of the effects as opposed to the other way around. I have Plumes and Afterneath on my board at every show. I love how they play off of each other. I really love gear that inspires, and I can write a new riff or song every time I put an EarthQuaker effect in my chain. ”
