Delicious Crisp Metal Distortion
I've had this rack for over 25 years. I'll probably never get rid of it—as it has amazingly crisp distortion for playing metal. It's also very difficult to find one for sale.
The mAXE includes a noise gate, and exciter "(harmonic exciter or aural exciter), which is an audio signal processing technique used to enhance a signal by dynamic equalization, phase manipulation, harmonic synthesis of (usually) high frequency signals, and through the addition of subtle harmonic distortion."
It still works, but I'm in process of replacing the pots and input jacks. I'm also thinking about copying the circuit(s) into a stomp box. This one is made in the USA and has all of the original knobs.

These analog preamps/amp&cab sims from the 80s and 90s fascinate me. Especially when it's in a rack. This mAxe wasn't a unit I was even aware of. Thanks for the great write-up, and for putting this thing on my radar. If you clone the circuits into a pedal, definitely keep us updated on the forum... there are more a than a few folks who would be interested, and maybe even one or two with enough expertise to grock each circuit and/or assist.

I was considering cloning this circuit as well (one of those, if I had time things). I'd be happy to share some pics of the board when I get a chance. I have already updated the pots and got the correct power supply through Rocktron... took several months to get that.
I've unofficially heard the Slipknot used these in their early days. It definitely will do their sound and scooped Pantera tones.
