Critic Reviews

MOTU 8Pre

soundonsound.com

The MOTU 8pre impresses with its dual functionality as both a Firewire audio interface and an 8-channel A/D converter, all at a competitive price. With solid sound quality, flexible zero-latency monitoring, and practical design elements like front-panel metering and separate volume controls, it offers great value. However, it lacks S/PDIF, AES, or Word Clock, and the bundled software is Mac-only. Despite minor mid-range congestion, the 8pre's preamps hold their own against pricier options, making it an excellent choice for first-time buyers and those looking to expand setups. Its simplicity and versatility make it a worthy investment.

My first professional audio interface, now my analog to digital converter!

I actually want to buy another one of these but I can't find one under $150 (including shipping) anymore. I was lucky to find this at that price for my first audio interface (midi in the rear is rare too!)

I love how much you can control just from the front panel! These work the best with other MOTUs, I read about issues clocking over ADAT on the internet but I haven't had a single one (all channels active), I suspect its the fact that my master interface is also a MOTU.

Notes

My studio can include 2 8Pre both bought new. They are respectively hooked to either 828mk3 FW via optical cables, to create a single 32 mono channels system.
