A most worthy "clonewheel" module, packed full of features, pleasantly presented, and a fantastic sound.
Roland takes all the innards of their fantastic VK-8 and packs them tightly into a MIDI module that can sit comfortably on some controllers that have a bit of spare real estate on their chassis. Otherwise, you may need a separate but solid stand for it (which Roland also made separately available).
As a "plug and play" module, it couldn't be simpler. You can MIDI it up to any synth or controller keyboard and start playing it right away like the real thing, moving drawbars in and out, riding the Leslie speed (which conveniently are the largest buttons in the middle of the fascia), etc. The quality of the B3 mimicry is superb.
If you want to do some detailed editing, that will take some time with the manual and diving through hidden menus. But you will only be doing this if you're really particular about things like the Leslie effect's slow, fast, rise, fall, tone settings (all of which are as one would expect, independently adjustable for woofer and horn). You can also tweak key click level, percussion recharge time and level, etc, etc.
Of course sadly, the main thing missing is the beautiful waterfall-style keyboard that was used on the VK-8 which was exceptionally well engineered and made the playing experience complete. However, for those less fussed with the feel of the keys, are content with a regular synth action (or just plain budget-conscious), but want a first-class rendering of that unmistakable Hammond sound, the VK-8M is the go.

The best bits of the VK-8 / VK-8M are here in the VR-09. You can grab drawbars right away, quickly adjust Leslie speed either with a dedicated button or a wave over the D-beam, and crank up compression and distortion. Significantly for seasoned players of the real tonewheel instruments, when you select the organ section of the VR, the key response changes and it becomes very shallow requiring only a millimeter or two of travel before the sound triggers, just like the original Hammonds.
