Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S61 MK2.

Features and functionality

  • The MK2 features aftertouch, which is missing in some newer models like the Novation in the same price range.

    Source
  • The S61 MK2 requires additional power if not connected via USB-C, unlike the Launchkey MK4, which is powered by USB 3 and is ultra-portable at only 3 kg.

    Source
  • The S61 MK2 can display Kontakt 8 instruments on its screens when used within Komplete Kontrol, but lacks native support for features like Combined and Leap.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Users successfully mapped buttons to non-NKS plugins in Ableton, hinting at potential similar functionality in Logic Pro.

    Source
  • Recent updates allow the S61 MK2 to map native DAW instruments, enhancing its compatibility with non-NKS VSTs.

    Source
  • While the S61 MK2 works with Kontakt 8 through Komplete Kontrol, it cannot search presets when using the native Kontakt 8 VST.

    Source
  • The S61 MK2 maintains compatibility with Kontakt 8, but users note it cannot fully utilize new features introduced in MK3 models.

Value and pricing

  • Buying used at $450 CAD is a significant saving compared to the $1,099 CAD for a new MK3, though prices vary by region.

    Source
  • Owners point out that while the hardware still functions, the lack of updates for new software features can feel like a limitation on their investment.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users find Arturia KeyLab glitchy and not worth the $750 CAD, suggesting the NI S61 MK2 as a more reliable alternative.

    Source
  • The Komplete Kontrol S61 MK2 offers a premium Fatar keybed, whereas the Novation Launchkey MK4 is more focused on DAW integration with features like real-time step sequencer control.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The S61 MK2 is appreciated for its build quality, especially when used with external plugins and DAWs, even if it’s not NI-heavy.

    Source
  • The S61 MK2 is favored for its deep NKS integration and is especially beneficial for users heavily invested in the Native Instruments ecosystem.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners find the S61 MK2 keybed to have poor travel depth on black keys, leading to a "squishy" feel, which is a highly personal preference.

    Source
  • Some users express dissatisfaction with NI's ecosystem strategy, feeling pressured to upgrade hardware frequently despite existing functionality.

NI Komplete Kontrol S61 MkII review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S61 MK2 impresses with enhanced DAW integration and a comprehensive sonic library. The addition of high-res color screens and improved controls boosts workflow efficiency, while the aftertouch-enabled Fatar keyboard offers a satisfying playing experience. However, the lack of sliders might be a drawback for some users. With robust integration for DAWs like Ableton Live and Logic Pro X, plus seamless Maschine support, it's a powerhouse for creativity. Overall, it's a must-have for users of Komplete software seeking deeper control and visual feedback.

Great build, beautifully responsive, and the keys have a nice 'semi weighted' feel.

Have been hammering this for a few years now and it seems to withstand most of what I throw at it. Integration with the NI software is seamless, and the control pots are great quality with just about the right amount of drag in them.
