UAD Pultec Passive EQ Collection review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Universal Audio UAD Pultec Passive EQ Plug-in Collection revives classic Pultec designs with impressive sonic fidelity. Its three EQ emulations stand out, particularly the MEQ-5, praised for its creative mid-range treatment, and the HLF-3C, known for its rich, musical filtering. However, the review offers little in terms of criticism, suggesting that while the plugins are a solid investment, users might seek more versatility in future updates. Overall, this collection is an essential tool for mixing, delivering warmth and clarity that keeps the spirit of the original hardware alive.

I'm not the the guy yet-I've used & coveted it's hardware for ages, but I need more time w/ it's plugin.

4 stars as I've loved the times I have used it but I've yet to dig deep. I'll update soon, I'm definitely excited to use it more. I hear nothing but glowing reviews, but if you notice my review "style?" I'm raw & harsh or very enthusiastic. Why bother otherwise I think is somewhere in there. Nobody needs a in depth review of a 57. I write about what I love or have been frustrated by the limitations of. I try to shine a light where others might not have-or as directly. I'm pretty sure im just a jerk.

I really want to shoot this out against a real Pultec as the UA emulations are so solid.... its funny, the guy I know who showed me this plugin has a huge analog studio with actual pultecs, so I am thinking its pretty solid.... then again the session in question was an on-spec thing for a children's show pitch, so he may have just been going for convenience.... it sounded pretty decent, but it was being used very subtley on an already great source

xaqary

Yeah, it does an ok job now that I've had more time with it. I'd be flat out stunned that someone with better options would reach for this for any other reason than convenience. It hints at what the hardware does better than any other emulation I've tried but again, it just hints at a Pultec. The sound of any Pultec is really just an unrealistic comparison.

The low end is much better than the high end in my opinion. It definitely tightens things up but the high end I never use. just doesn't do it for me at all. Makes sense that's where it suffers really.

It also seems to really favor live content vs. synths, etc. too. I've actually had more success with UA's Curve Bender plugin for anything EM.

I'm using it less and less tho. Maybe I'll give it another run on the new EM session I'm workin on, see what I can get outta it.

xaqary

Oh yeah...3.25 stars.

My favorite eq's.

Hands down the best for boosting frequencies in my opinion.

"Another favorite is the the Pultec Passive EQ Collection. I like to use it without any boost — just insert it and it gives you a wonderful tool for blending live elements with synths — just by going through the virtual circuitry." - Armin Van Buuren.

When asked if he has uses many of the same "go-to" plug-ins, Diplo responded, "Yes. For vocalists, I nearly always use the Pultec EQP 1-A and the 1176 Compressor. The Pultec, especially, has a great ability to boost up the shine or fresh quality of a vocal, and the 1176 keeps it in place."

"We probably used the majority of the bundle. I would say about 80 percent of the plug-ins we used extensively. Our big favorites were the Helios EQ, the Pultec, the Harrison; the Neve 88RS channel strip was used a lot."
