Description

Introducing the Walrus Audio Polychrome, a vibrant addition to your pedalboard that promises a spectrum of modulated tones. This true bypass, all-analog flanger is your ticket to both traditional flanging and complex vibrato sounds. Its unique dual-voice design and intuitive controls allow you to craft your perfect sound with ease.

The Polychrome Flanger's dual-voice design offers two distinct flavors of flanging. You can enjoy a full, traditional flange or flip the switch for a notched flange with less low-end for a more complex tone. Not to mention the unique pitch vibrato that you can achieve by dialing the feedback to minimum and cranking the D-F-V knob to maximum.

The Polychrome's controls are designed for simplicity and versatility. The D-F-V knob blends between a dry signal, traditional flange, and pitch vibrato. The shape switch lets you choose between sine, triangle, or random waveforms to modulate the delay line. The voice switch allows you to select between two distinct flange voices.

This pedal isn't just about great sound; it has been constructed to withstand the rigors of touring. With a rugged, die-cast metal housing and premium components, the Polychrome Flanger promises to be a reliable companion for years to come.

  • Some users may not find it significantly better than cheaper alternatives

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Walrus Audio Polychrome.

Features and functionality

  • The blend knob allows users to adjust the ratio between dry and wet signal, making it highly compatible with multiple pedals and adaptable to different tones.

    Source
  • Polychrome's swoosh effect initiates with each note, unlike BF-2 or MXR flangers, which maintain continuous swooshing between notes.

    Source
  • The momentary soft click feature is appreciated for providing a less intrusive activation compared to traditional switches.

    Source
  • When switched to vibrato mode, the pedal produces a "darker" or more lo-fi sound, which may appeal to those seeking a unique tonal quality.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners mention using the pedal for chorus and vibrato effects, with the random wave shape providing a warped vinyl sound.

    Source
  • Users find the Polychrome's modulation sound more appealing than the MXR Flanger's brighter LED, which can be distracting.

    Source
  • Treble reduction in the flanger can create a perceived volume drop, despite no actual volume cut, altering the pedal's presence in a mix.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Compared to the Boss BF-3, the Polychrome offers a more subtle swoosh and better integration with other pedals, while the BF-3 emphasizes loud, chorus-like flanger effects.

    Source
  • Polychrome's rate knob covers the entire range of the Boss BF-2 within the first quarter turn, offering a wide variability in a compact range.

    Source
  • Some owners prefer TC Electronic Thunderstorm for traditional flanger sounds but find Polychrome effective as a versatile bridge between chorus and flanger effects.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • A volume drop issue in older units can be fixed with a mod, and newer models already have this issue resolved.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Described as a "flanger for people who hate flangers," it's praised for subtle, layered effects that can blend into many musical styles without overpowering the original tone.

    Source
  • For a prominent flanger sound, set depth and sweep near noon, dfv at noon, voice switch down, and resonance past noon.

    Source
  • The Polychrome might suit users seeking chorus-like effects, as its flanger character is subtle compared to more traditional models like the Boss BF-2.

Walrus Audio Polychrome Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Walrus Audio Polychrome flanger is a versatile modulation powerhouse that excels in delivering rich, chameleon-like tones with an analog warmth. Its controls offer a wide range of modulation options, allowing for both subtle and extreme sounds. However, the sensitivity of the controls can make it tricky to dial in specific settings, and using full wet can lead to a perceived volume drop. Despite these challenges, its ability to produce everything from lush flanger textures to phaser-like effects makes it a compelling choice for musicians seeking variety without sacrificing quality.

Walrus Audio Polychrome review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Walrus Audio Polychrome is a standout flanger pedal that combines an impressive range of sounds with intuitive controls, making it a worthy addition to any pedalboard. Its selectable waveforms and smart footswitch functionality offer versatile modulation options, from classic flanging to experimental tones. However, the absence of an expression pedal input and external tap tempo may limit some players. Overall, while it excels in delivering rich textures and unique effects, it could benefit from a few more connectivity options to enhance its usability.

Walrus Audio Polychrome review: An analogue flanger with a rich range of tones

guitar.com

With its stunning array of tonal options and rich core sounds, the Walrus Audio Polychrome flanger carves out a unique niche in the world of effects pedals. While some may find its extensive features overwhelming, those willing to dive in will be rewarded with everything from subtle shimmers to chaotic ring-modulated madness. The smart momentary bypass switch adds a clever touch, enhancing usability. However, for players seeking straightforward flanging, the complexity might feel like overkill. Ultimately, this pedal is a worthy addition for adventurous guitarists eager to explore new sonic territories.

guitarworld.com

The Walrus Audio Polychrome is a standout flanger that blends a rich array of tones with impressive flexibility. It shines with its momentary operation and wide sound palette, making it a versatile addition to any pedalboard. However, it lacks an expression pedal input, and some users might notice a slight volume drop at certain settings. Overall, this pedal offers an abundance of flanging options that can cater to various musical styles, earning it a solid recommendation despite its minor drawbacks.

Never thought I would use a flanger.

I have to give props to Walrus Audio AGAIN because I never thought I would buy a flanger but here I am with a brand new $200+ flanger that I can’t stop using and being inspired by. I love turning down the feedback and switching both switches down for a random warble sound that adds an interesting effect to a clean sound.

Amazing Flanger and Chorus

Wasnt really a fan of flangers until I tired the polychrome, it sounds amazing as a chorus/vibrato with the feedback all the way down, and its has great versatility once you turned it up and use it as a proper flanger
