Build quality

  • The Yamaha EX2 console estimates around 400-500 lbs, with the bench alone weighing 102.4 lbs, indicating a robust and heavy build.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Owners suggest the EX2 might weigh over 700 lbs with all components; moving it requires multiple people due to its bulk and weight.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • The EX2 can be modded into a synthesizer organ, similar to the E70, with available documentation like "Son of GX" for guidance.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The EX2 lacks direct control over resonance or envelopes but has analog synth architecture with "Bright" controls acting as filter cutoffs.

    Source
  • It's noted that the EX2 has an early digital generator, not a VCO, offering a unique sound profile compared to other synths.

    Source
  • The Yamaha EX2 includes a "symphonic chorus" switch that produces rich, swirling sounds similar to Joy Division's string textures.

    Source
  • The E75 adds string and vocal ensemble sections and a different drum machine to the E70's base features.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The touch vibrato function may not work on all EX2 units, as some owners have reported difficulties in activating this feature.

    Source
  • The EX2's digital oscillators can simultaneously generate saw, square, pulse, and multiple sine waves, making it versatile for creating complex sounds.

    Source
  • The EX-2 Electone was used in Metronomy's song “The Look,” highlighting its capability for producing distinctive sounds.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Although similar in appearance, the EX2 is not a "CS-80 organ" and features a different internal setup, being more akin to a digital generator model like the CS01.

    Source
  • The E70, E75, EX1, and EX2 models are polyphonic synthesizers with digital oscillators, offering richer sound and polyphonic filtering compared to the D80 and D85 models.

    Source
  • The D85, though superficially similar, has different hardware and lacks the polyphonic filtering of the E70/E75 series.

    Source
  • The EX-2 Electone is often compared to the GX-1 due to its similar size and shape, but is considered less remarkable despite having unique sounds.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Originally costing $26K in the 80s, adjusted for inflation, the EX2's value is roughly equivalent to $100K today.

Joseph Mount mentions using this workstation in the interview at the end of this article: "It's another one of these things that I bought and then felt I needed to get my money's worth out of,” he says. "It's this big church-organ-type thing that sounds amazing and has the same kind of circuitry as a CS80. It has a limited synthesizer section, but it's so warm. Everything on 'I'm Aquarius' is pretty much played on that. I also bought this Baldwin Electric Harpsichord which has been kind of relegated to just the intro of 'Monstrous'. Originally it was played on the harpsichord, but it sounded a bit too baroque.” This is also the workstation that can be seen in the music video for "The Look".
