Description

Introducing the Yamaha Montage 7, a revolution in synthesizer technology that takes the legacy of Yamaha’s iconic DX and Motif keyboards and propels it into the future. This synthesizer is designed to inspire, allowing you to unleash your creativity with its sophisticated dynamic control, massive sound creation, and streamlined workflow.

The heart of the Montage 7 is the Motion Control Synthesis Engine, which controls and unifies two legendary sound engines: AWM2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) and FM-X (Frequency Modulation). This allows for unprecedented sound design possibilities as you layer and zone these engines across eight parts in a single Montage Performance.

The Montage 7’s Super Knob allows you to control multiple parameters simultaneously, resulting in dramatic sound changes from subtle to radical. This feature can even be assigned to a second foot controller, providing easy manipulation of the sound when playing with both hands.

The synthesizer also includes a massive range of high-quality sounds, from the Yamaha CFX Premium Grand Piano to detailed strings and woodwinds. The Montage 7 is even compatible with Motif XF voices, and Yamaha is developing an FM converter to make it compatible with DX7 series voices as well.

Key Features:

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Yamaha Montage 7.

Build quality

  • The Montage 7 keybed is praised for its quality feel and quick response, significantly superior to the MODX 6/7 keybed.

    Source
  • The classic Montage is noted for its superior build quality, featuring a robust metal housing compared to the MODX+.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The velocity curve on the 61-key version is noted to be dynamic but might feel too quiet without a MIDI controller for some users.

    Source
  • The Montage M includes the AN-X synth engine, offering sound capabilities not found in the MODX series, providing an edge in synthesis versatility.

    Source
  • The Montage M series offers a smooth transition feature, allowing seamless sound changes while sustaining notes, enhancing live performance fluidity.

Comparisons

  • The Montage/MODX offers a robust synth engine, unlike the Roland RD2000, which is more focused on piano action.

    Source
  • The MODX+ offers the same synth engine as the classic Montage but with fewer controls and a lighter, more portable plastic build.

    Source
  • Some users don't perceive significant sound quality improvements between older Montage models and the new Montage M8x, despite upgraded hardware capabilities.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Montage series is recommended for users seeking deep synthesis capabilities, including motion sequencing and super knob programming, suitable for advanced sound design.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The Expanded Softsynth Plugin (E.S.P.) for the Montage M is anticipated, but concerns exist about its potential cost to current Montage owners.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Long waiting times and high price points deter some users from upgrading to the Montage M, despite its improved sound quality and features.

Critic Reviews

Yamaha Montage 7

soundonsound.com

The Yamaha Montage 7 impresses with its dual AWM2 and FM-X sound engines, delivering versatile and powerful synthesis capabilities with up to 256-voice polyphony. Its arpeggiator and modulation features, including the Super Knob and Motion Control, offer dynamic sound-shaping possibilities. The Montage's touchscreen interface and multitimbral effects enhance usability. However, the narrower keybed may displease some pianists, and its price point is a bit steep compared to competitors. While lacking digital audio outputs and expansion options, the Montage stands out for its sound quality and extensive creative potential, making it a compelling choice for those who can justify the investment.
