    Source
  • Despite its age, the S80 maintains value due to durability and functionality, with original owners noting sustained performance and condition over decades.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The S80 offers some decent synthesizer sounds, but as a piano, its unusually weighted keys may not be comfortable for all players.

    Source
  • The Yamaha S80 lacks USB connectivity and has a dated LCD interface, making it cumbersome for modern editing and programming without additional software.

    Source
  • The S80 is considered a powerful ROMpler, ideal for those interested in 90s/00s sounds, but less suited for those wanting a modern synthesis experience.

    Source
  • The S80's 5-pin MIDI output remains relevant for modern setups, though a proper interface is necessary for optimal performance with newer computers.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Yamaha P45, a more affordable model, is often preferred over the S80 for its overall playing experience.

    Source
  • Users found Roland's MIDI cable with an integrated interface superior to budget options, providing reliable performance and compatibility with modern systems.

    Source

Use cases and applications

    Source
  • The S80 excels as a MIDI controller for VSTs, particularly Rhodes sounds, providing a versatile tool for studio setups despite its age.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • MidiQuest app offers a GUI to access the S80’s features, reducing menu diving and enhancing user experience for deeper sound exploration.

    Source
  • High-quality MIDI interfaces like Roland's integrated cable can resolve connectivity issues, unlike cheaper alternatives that often fail to filter data properly.

    Source
  • Removing unnecessary drivers can sometimes improve MIDI performance, though using the right adapter is crucial for functionality.

    Source

User experience

  • The S80's 64-note polyphony can lead to note cut-offs when using the sustain pedal during complex passages, which may affect live performance quality.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Issues with MIDI signal lag are often due to low-quality USB to MIDI adapters; investing in a higher-end model can alleviate these problems.

Yamaha S80

soundonsound.com

The Yamaha S80 is a versatile powerhouse for studio and stage, offering a lively and comprehensive sound set, perfect for various musical styles. Its 88-note weighted keyboard, coupled with a broad range of assignable controllers, makes it an excellent master keyboard. While editing procedures could be more intuitive and some front-panel controls are missing, the S80 compensates with its robust filters and impressive electric piano and guitar sounds. Though it lacks some features of its sibling, the CS6x, like Scene Morphing and a Phrase Clip Sampler, the S80 remains a strong all-rounder, especially for those not solely focused on dance music.

Yamaha S80 review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Yamaha S80 is a heavyweight synthesizer that delivers an impressive range of features for serious musicians. With its expansive sound palette based on Yamaha's AWM2 technology, the S80 offers a rich array of piano sounds and a weighted 88-note keyboard, making it ideal for pianists. Its robust construction and detailed control options, including assignable knobs and sliders, earn it high marks. However, its weight and lack of a disk drive, relying instead on SmartMedia for storage, might be considered drawbacks. Overall, the S80 is a powerful instrument that excels in sound quality and playability.

Yamaha S80 -- Incredible!

Love it! I bought new back in 1999, when it first came out. The S80 basically replaced my KX-88 + MEP4 combo that I was currently using. The S80 already has the MEP4 built-in making it a Great Master Controller! The key action is superb! Weighted,but-yet still fast. Very responsive AfterTouch! I recent picked up a Motif XS and was very disappointed in the sounds as compared to the S80. The S80 is much phatter, warmer, punchier and much more expressive than the Motif. Basically, it's going to be a very sad day for me if my S80 every croaks.

"When I was trying out the Yamaha AW4416, S80 and S30, I kept thinking to myself, 'Wow, musical equipment has sure come a long way in the last 10 years.' But when you stop and think about it, you realize that it's not only the equipment that has changed, but also the environment surrounding the music."

Over the years, Ron Mael has played numerous synths, keyboards and computer-based instruments — Moog's Polymoog, Roland's JP-4 and JP-8, the Wurlitzer electric piano and the Fairlight CMI, to name a few — but his workhorse favorites have been the Yamaha CS-80 (produced in the late '70s) and the sleeker S80 (introduced in 1999). The S80 was used on their Album "Lil' Beethoven".
