Rex and the Bass: 1970s SL500 Yamaha Studio Lord Guitar Review

rexbass.com

The Yamaha SL500 Studio Lord is a hidden gem from the lawsuit era, offering a cheaper yet quality alternative to a Gibson Les Paul. Its mahogany body and rosewood fretboard deliver solid playability, with a neck that's comfortable and not too bulky. Despite some minor blemishes and oxidization typical of a 40-year-old guitar, it remains in respectable condition. The pickups provide a sweet sound at normal levels and crunch impressively with overdrive. While the tailpiece shows some pitting, this is overshadowed by its overall charm and affordability, making it a compelling choice for those seeking vintage vibes without the Gibson price tag.

Great Guitar

I traded an organ for this and I’m stoked. Mine is the SL400 model. Great for blues and rock and adding pedals to. It’s heavy, but it sounds great. I’ve never played a proper Gibson Les Paul so I have nothing to compare it to. I reckon it does a great job though. Feels and looks like good quality throughout, nothing cheap or nasty here. Excellent guitar.
