Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Zoom 505 Guitar.

User experience

  • The Zoom 505 mkII is known for being noisy with subpar distortions and amp simulations, but its modulation and delay effects are usable despite limited fine-tuning options.

    Source
  • Owners recall the Zoom 505 fondly for its ability to replicate iconic sounds, such as switching from clean to distortion for "Smells Like Teen Spirit," evoking strong nostalgia.

    Source
  • Despite its harsh sound quality, the Zoom 505 is valued for its unapologetically bold effects, which can be useful for distinctive overdubs in recordings.

    Source
  • Owners note difficulties in replicating the Zoom 505's specific doubling effect using other equipment, emphasizing the pedal's unique processing and sound signature.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The pedal can achieve different delay times through the up/down scroll buttons, addressing the lack of detailed control.

    Source
  • The ring mod on the Zoom 505 is described as ugly and strange, contributing to its reputation for producing unusual, industrial sounds.

    Source
  • The pedal is praised for its acoustic simulator effect, which some owners found particularly impressive.

    Source
  • The Zoom 505's "double" effect is unique and challenging to replicate with other pedals; it mimics two guitars playing simultaneously with a short delay.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Some users find the pitch shifter effective for octaves and perfect intervals, integrating it into their signature sound despite its lack of diatonic intelligence.

    Source
  • The pedal is valued by some for its unique industrial sound, particularly in combination effects like pitch shifter and autowah, often used with a line selector for wet/dry mixes.

    Source
  • Some users repurpose the Zoom 505 as a stereo headphone amp, appreciating its cab simulation feature when connected directly to an audio interface.

    Source
  • The Zoom 505's flanger effect is highly praised for its rich, "juicy" sound, compelling some users to consider purchasing the pedal solely for this effect.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Users suggest the TC Mimiq Stereo and Strymon Deco as alternative options for achieving similar doubling effects, with distinct tonal characteristics.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Achieving the doubling effect typically requires a digital delay set to the shortest possible time with a single repeat, though some delays may not be capable of emulating the 505's effect.

👍

Probably one of the worst pedals in terms of the ease of tweaking with the effects, the plus and minus buttons are pretty bad and they have been kind of broken since my dad gave it to me. BUT it has a lot of effects and I especially enjoy the distortion section, where there's overdrive, distortion, "blues", fuzz, "lead" and "metal". For the modulation section the chorus is decent and I like the "double" effect. The phaser is pretty cool too.

Ohhhh... I had one of these wayyyy back when they first came out. It was the cheapest multi-FX on the market at the time... and it sounded like it, lol. But I still got some interesting sounds out of it. I bet it sounds super lofi by today's standards. Not an easy box to use, as you mention.

20 years old but still useful

Great for that 90s Nine inch Nails digital distortion sound like Ruiner. Also has some nice usable modulation sounds.

Roadside find

Brother found it on the side of the road.

I am sure back in the day it was a great modeler like the Line 6 or Behringer; the sound is on par with these devices. It was easy to figure out the simulations are not bad and are useable for bedroom use. 20 yrs. later; Spyders, Viper's, and Mustangs, why would spend the money on this pedal? I'll keep it for a back up and practice.

Great for beginners

This pedal is brilliant for new guitarists, allows for a lot of sound customization and very easy to use and understand.

Old but still useful

This is my first bass processor. It has some sentimental value and nowadays I use it for practice when I need something small and easy to carry. The build-in tuner is very useful too!
