Critic Reviews

Akai S950 Digital Sampler (MT Jan 89)

muzines.co.uk

The Akai S950 MIDI Digital Sampler builds upon its predecessor, the S900, with expanded memory and time-stretching capabilities, making it a solid choice for first-time buyers delving into sampling. Its improved sampling rate and compatibility with S1000 disks add to its appeal. However, the lack of velocity crossfading and the need to replace the ASK90 interface may frustrate existing S900 users. While not a revolutionary upgrade, the S950 remains a practical option for those serious about sampling, even if it falls short of some expectations.

12-bit << MEGA BEAST >>

Legendaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaary crunch. 90's sound signature. Really intuitive to use (imo). Sampling anything in this beast is great. Plus, you cant go wrong with the low-pass filter on this bad bwoy. Just a great, feature packed sampler. JUNGLIST MASSIVE!

A (perhaps the definative) classic sampler

Although it looks rather cryptic by todays standards, it is actually quite easy to use and sounds great. I eventually sold it when I got my mpc1000. However, the s950 had what sounded to me like a better system for polyphonic instrumental sampling. In other words, it is a great sampler for turning a short wave loop into an awesome sounding instrument part. Or, for making sick low-fi drum samples.

Nice

Easy to use, very very easy to use.. great for drums, warm and fat.. But i dont miss it when compared to the beef of the SP1200 or Sequential Prophet 2000. I loved its simplicity.

He says, ". I came back from Detroit, sold my record collection, got a few grand together and bought an Akai S950 sampler, a Roland D-5 as a master keyboard, a DAT machine, a Roland R-5, which was their latest drum machine at the time, and an Atari 1040 with Opcode Vision. So I had pretty good gear to start with and I locked myself away for six months to read manuals and teach myself."

"I'll sit down and listen to a load of reggae, funk and jazz and eventually I'll hear something that I like and then load that into the Akai 950, start a tune. Normally, after two hours, I'll know if it's good or not. And, oh yeah, I'm ruthless, I'll just junk it if it's shit, not even save any sounds.”

"I worked as an employee twice for Elite, the 1st time 1985-1986 and the 2nd time around 1989-1990. The 1st time I was removed as an employee and taken on as a freelance musician earning a fixed fee per project, this cost them less but gave me the freedom to work for other people as well. I was taken on again in 1989 or there abouts, and things were much better, they got me some decent kit including an AKAI S950 sampler and a Korg M1 keyboard a long with Notator on the Atari ST. I produced music for Amiga, PC, Atari ST and NES machines. Later on Elite decided they were going to start publishing their own games and this required a lot of money. To this end they streamlined the company and made redundant a large portion of the staff, including me." - Mark Cooksey
