Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Audeze LCD-X.

Use cases and applications

  • The LCD-X's soundstage is noted to be more forward, resembling speakers' sound rather than the enveloping effect of other headphones.

    Source
  • The LCD-X is praised for its imaging in gaming, offering a better sense of height compared to other headphones.

    Source
  • Some find the LCD-X excels with bass-heavy genres when EQ'd properly, making it suitable for hip hop and electronica enthusiasts.

    Source

Other

  • Planar magnetic headphones like the LCD-X are perceived as less durable compared to dynamic drivers, with concerns about longevity and environmental sensitivity.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Audeze's headphones are noted for being expensive, with suggestions that the price reflects build materials and craftsmanship rather than significant sound improvements over cheaper models.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners prefer the LCD-X for genres with fast transitions like metal and jazz, but not for acoustic or classic rock, due to specific tonal qualities.

    Source
  • Owners report the LCD-X has a notably narrow soundstage, which affects instrument separation and can make orchestral music sound claustrophobic.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • iFi Gryphon, Black Label, and Diablo are suggested for users who want a single-device solution to improve LCD-X performance.

    Source
  • Owners frequently recommend using a +3db bass shelf at 150Hz with EQ software like Equalizer APO and Peace GUI for better bass response.

    Source
  • Users recommend using Oratory1990's EQ settings or Audeze Reveal Plus plugin for improved sound, but many make additional tweaks based on personal preference.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Users find that the Audeze LCD-X, even when EQ'd, is outperformed in clarity by the Sennheiser HD560s, a much cheaper model.

    Source
  • Transitioning from Audio Technica ATH-M50X to LCD-X may require an adjustment period due to the M50X's bass-heavy tuning.

    Source
  • The LCD-X often requires EQ to achieve optimal sound, whereas the cheaper LCD-2 has a more even stock tuning but sacrifices detail and bass slam.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Users experience a constant buzzing noise with LCD-X, often tied to grounding issues. Solutions include USB isolation or using iFi products, though some report mixed results.

    Source
  • A powerful amp/dac is recommended to fully leverage the LCD-X's capabilities; budget setups like the Fiio K3 may limit performance, especially in bass response.

    Source

Build quality

  • Some owners report that the Audeze LCD-X has a buzzing sound due to a ground loop issue, which disappears when touching metal objects or using certain USB isolation methods.

    Source
  • The LCD-X is described as comfortable for extended wear due to its soft pads and suspension headband, despite its heavy build.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Some users express dissatisfaction with Sonarworks' target curve, preferring custom EQ adjustments for optimal sound.

    Source
  • For Mac users, alternatives to Equalizer APO include eqMac or SoundSource, which support parametric EQ adjustments.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Owners suggest that the LCD-X delivers exceptional percussion detail, making it ideal for tracks where drum reproduction is critical.

    Source
  • Some owners highlight the LCD-X's linear bass extension, which can sound "thin" without EQ; EQ is often necessary to enhance bass without muddiness.

    Source
  • The LCD-X is praised for its incredible drum reproduction and vocal clarity, with some users mentioning the ability to discern lyrics more clearly.

Critic Reviews

Audeze LCD-X Review - Devil In The Details – Headphones.com

headphones.com

The Audeze LCD-X headphones impress with their robust build and stunning sound quality when paired with EQ, offering detailed midrange and exceptional imaging. However, their hefty weight and stock sound without EQ are significant drawbacks. While they excel in depth and bass with EQ, the comfort issues and need for sound adjustments detract from their appeal. Ideal for those prioritizing audio precision over comfort, but not without compromises.

Audeze LCD-X Review: Uncovering Sonic Mastery - Home Studio Basics

homestudiobasics.com

The Audeze LCD-X offers unrivaled sound quality with its impressive bass, detailed mid-range, and smooth treble, ideal for audiophiles and professionals seeking high-resolution audio. However, its significant weight can cause discomfort during extended use, limiting its practicality for long listening sessions. While its robust build and sonic performance are commendable, the hefty price and lack of comfort make it a niche choice. For those seeking a similar sonic signature with better comfort and value, considering the LCD-2C might be a wiser investment. Overall, the LCD-X delivers exceptional audio but at a physical and financial cost.

Its sound profile is versatile, appealing to both audiophiles and professionals, with a warm yet detailed bass and clear mids. The high-end frequencies maintain clarity without harshness, making it suitable for long sessions. While not the cheapest option, its unique sound signature and adaptability, aided by Audeze's Reveal+ software, make it a compelling choice for those seeking a balanced headphone that bridges professional and personal listening experiences. Audeze LCD-X Headphones - The Absolute Sound

theabsolutesound.com

The Audeze LCD-X headphones are celebrated for their exceptional clarity, dynamic range, and 3D imaging. Despite their hefty weight, they offer comfort over extended listening sessions. These planar-magnetic headphones stand out with low distortion and wide frequency response, rivaling high-end speaker systems in sonic accuracy. However, they could benefit from a slight boost in the 1.5kHz to 3.5kHz range to enhance openness and a reduction in diaphragm mass for higher resolution. Overall, the LCD-X is praised as a near-flawless flagship model in the competitive realm of high-end headphones.

Above 17K and below 50? You hear that!

There's nothing left to say about building- or sound quality, but I must notice that the fit is made for huge heads. It could be a little smaller and it would be the best headphones ever made. The sound is very transparent.
