Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro.

User experience

  • Owners note a "graininess" in vocals, akin to a buzz, affecting certain voice recordings.

    Source
  • Some users found the DT880 less effective for mixing translation, especially in the low end, compared to other headphones like the HD600.

    Source
  • The DT880 600 ohm version is favored for its sound quality, but requires a strong amplifier for optimal performance.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Users suggest testing the Audio Technica ATH-M50x alongside the DT880 to determine personal sound preference, as they offer different audio experiences.

    Source
  • The DT880 is seen as a middle ground between the DT770 and DT990, offering neutral frequencies compared to the 770’s bass-heavy and 990’s treble-heavy profiles.

    Source
  • The DT880's resolution, imaging, and soundstage are said to rival some $1,000 headphones, though specific models aren't named.

    Source
  • Owners note the DT880 is less treble-heavy than the DT990, making it preferable for those sensitive to high frequencies.

    Source
  • The DT880's treble peak at 8kHz may be challenging without EQ, while alternatives like the Hifiman Sundara provide a more balanced sound.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The DT880 is perceived as offering good clarity and oomph, but not as precise for mixing detail as the HD600 or DT990.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The semi-open back design of the DT880 makes it less suitable for vocal tracking, live monitoring, or public listening compared to closed-back models.

    Source
  • These headphones are noted for their wide soundstage, which rivals but doesn't surpass the AKG K702, and are especially good for relaxed listening due to their imaging.

    Source
  • Owners suggest EQ adjustments for the DT880 to better suit a variety of genres, enhancing its versatility for diverse music styles.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The headphones are amp-picky; they require a high voltage output for optimal sound, failing which they sound unimpressive.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The DT880’s imaging is described as “enveloping,” providing a surrounding aural experience without any dead zones.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Recabling the DT880 for balanced drive significantly enhances performance, especially with powerful amps like the THX 887.

    Source

Build quality

  • The plastic sliders in the adjustment mechanism are prone to failure, but replacements are affordable and available directly from Beyerdynamic.

    Source
  • Beyerdynamic headphones are praised for durability and offer replacement parts for every component, though the fixed cable can be a drawback.

Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro Studio Headphone Review - Sonarworks Blog

sonarworks.com

The Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro headphones are a robust choice for studio use, praised for their comfort and durability, with nearly every part replaceable. They offer superb, neutral sound and a dependable sub-bass response, making them ideal for production, mixing, and mastering. However, without calibration, the high frequencies can be overly emphasized, and the non-detachable cable is a notable downside. While they require a headphone amp to reach their full potential, they still provide excellent value compared to competitors like the Sennheiser HD 650, especially when calibrated. The DT 880 Pro is a reliable and adaptable option for audio professionals, despite minor drawbacks.

The DT880 Pro by Beyerdynamic — Headfonics

headfonics.com

The Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro impresses with its robust build and classic design, making it a reliable choice for audiophiles. However, its large carrying case might not suit those seeking portability. Sound-wise, the 250 Ohm version offers slightly more bass at the cost of a less airy sound, and while its mids may come across as dry, the treble is generally well-received. The exposed wire between the cups poses a minor durability concern, but overall, it remains a solid option in the "Big 3" lineup alongside AKG K701 and Sennheiser HD650.

Good, however uncomfortable

Only issue I have is they're very uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time. Bass is a little lacking but I tend to apply a headphone EQ profile to match Harmon curve response during mixing sometimes.

Good quality mixing reference

Very good quality headphones lasting for years without crumbling. I had the Beyerdynamic DT990 before but its boost in low-end and treble gave me a hard time mixing. The DT880 is way more flat in comparison with good resolution in the mids and a smooth bass response. The half-open-design might be bleeding on vocalrecordings, but for this the DT770 is more serviceable.

speedydtm

Near perfection

There isn't anything really negative I can say about these headphones. They sound beautiful, detailed, and full of life, and their neutrality makes them perfect for music creation. The treble is a bit exaggerated, but I always double check my work on other sound sources so that's never been an issue. It makes them more enjoyable to use for casual listening, which I think balances things out.

Main Reference Source

For me these are the best bang for your buck that there is with "studio headphones". They are reliable, sturdy, accurate (flat and detailed), not too obtrusive (as many over-ears are), and fashionable. I've been using these for so long and I've not been failed.

Accurate and great sound

My favourite studio headphone for sound production - amazing flat sound for a very good price.
