Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Blackout Effectors Whetstone Analog Phaser.

Features and functionality

  • The Blackout Effectors Whetstone is noted for its lush, warm sound and versatility, but it is large and takes up significant space on pedalboards.

    Source
  • Whetstone's phasing ranges from long minute-long sweeps to ring mod-like effects, with additional univibe and harmonic tremolo flavors.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Empress Phaser, while compact, lacks the warmth of the Whetstone, and the Phase 90 is criticized for not being able to achieve very slow phasing.

    Source
  • The EQD Grand Orbiter is deemed more suitable for synths than guitars, compared to the Whetstone's performance with guitars.

    Source
  • The Spaceman Explorer is suggested as a potential compact alternative with similar tonal qualities to the Whetstone.

    Source
  • The Whetstone is described as having similarities to a Small Stone with additional controls, indicating its design inspiration may be rooted in classic phaser models.

    Source
  • Some owners suggest the Keeley Phaser (discontinued green model) for its superior tone compared to the Whetstone, indicating a preference for its sound quality.

    Source
  • The Toadworks Phantasm, despite being large and discontinued, offers an axis control feature that significantly enhances tonal variation, unlike the Whetstone.

    Source
  • Chase Bliss Audio pedals, specifically the Wombtone mkII, are recommended as high-quality alternatives to consider alongside the Whetstone for those willing to spend more.

    Source

Build quality

  • The Whetstone's side-mounted jacks are prone to breaking quickly, indicating potential fragility in the design.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The Whetstone can experience headroom issues with bass-heavy setups, such as a Jackson Dinky tuned to B standard, leading to saturation unless powered at 18V.

    Source

User experience

  • Some knob positions on the Whetstone may cause hum or volume drops, making it finicky and unpredictable in certain settings.

Versatile time bending machine

"Made with precision and balls" (Blackout effectors) Without a doubt the most complex and tweakable pedal I own, not easy to tame, but now that i'm getting a grip of it I think I'll never let it go. Auto-Wah, Leslie speaker, vibe, tremolo, syrup phasing, monstrous slow pad, ring modulation, this analog beast does it all. Phasing taken to a whole new level. The level knob is great. The only minus thing I could say is the Fix mode seems to only work around 7 to 10. You really need to write down your settings, as it is kinda difficult to dial it , I dropped a star because of that. Not an easy pedal to operate.
