Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Boss CE-20 Chorus Ensemble.

Features and functionality

  • The CE-20 includes multiple chorus types, but many users find the sound lacks warmth and feels lifeless, which can be a dealbreaker for chorus enthusiasts.

    Source
  • The CE-20's Dimension mode is praised for its stereo capabilities, though users note it’s less utilized due to mono setups.

    Source
  • The CE-20 lacks a depth knob in its CE-1 mode, staying true to the original CE-1 design, unlike the CE-2w which offers depth adjustment.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Modern digital pedals, like those from Strymon and Meris, are often preferred over the CE-20 due to better modulation capabilities and more compact form factors.

    Source
  • The PastFX Chorus Ensemble is recommended for those seeking accurate CE-1 sounds, as it includes the original preamp circuit.

    Source
  • The CE-2w is noted for its versatility and quick-to-dial settings, often preferred for its authentic reproduction of classic chorus tones.

    Source
  • The CE-20 is noted for its better input headroom compared to the DC-2, making it more suitable for use with "hot" active pickups or in effects loops.

    Source
  • The CE-20's Dimension D emulation is highlighted as more faithful than the CC300, which some users find extends delay times too much in combo modes.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The CE-20 requires 160mA power, and while it's compatible with standard 9V supplies, it necessitates high-output outlets on power supplies.

    Source

User experience

  • Users frequently mention the large size of the CE-20 as a potential drawback, especially for those with limited pedalboard space.

    Source
  • Users find the CE-2w captures the "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" tone, highlighting its effectiveness for replicating iconic sounds.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The CE-20 may be more suitable for players who use multiple chorus styles, though many prefer the simplicity of a single, high-quality chorus effect.

    Source
  • The CE-20 excels in producing "snowy" CE-1 tones, ideal for 70s swirly sounds and dreamy 80s yacht rock, especially in mono.

    Source
  • The CE-20 is praised as a more budget-friendly alternative to the CE-1, especially for those looking to use it with a JC120 amp.

    Source
  • Users recommend setting the level switch to -10dB for instrument level or +4dB for line level to optimize performance depending on the setup.

Critic Reviews

CE-20 Chorus Ensemble Review: I play alot of Chili Peppers, Arctic Monkeys, Muse, Pink Floyd,... | Boss | Guitar Effects | Reviews @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com

ultimate-guitar.com

An impressive chorus pedal, the Boss CE-20 offers a wide array of rich sounds, from the classic CE-1 to the versatile Standard mode, all without muddying your tone. It’s easy to use despite its complex appearance, with useful features like re-writable presets and stereo inputs/outputs. However, it lacks the warmth of an analog chorus and can be a battery hog, requiring careful power management. Overall, it's a reliable, durable, and versatile choice for those seeking diverse chorus effects.

Amazing Chorus!

I bought this CE-20 second hand, really cheap, and I'm so glad that I did! Boss really knows how to make fantastic pedals, the CE-20 is indeed one of those! A wide variety of Chorus types and a lot of parametres to control them through! A pedal you owe to add to your arsenal!
