Critic Reviews

Boss Dimension C & Hi Band Flanger (IM Feb 86)

muzines.co.uk

The Boss HF-2 Hi Band Flanger stands out in a crowded market with its unique high-octave flanging effect, delivering crystal-clear sound. It's praised for its tonal quality and ease of use, featuring four rotary controls. Despite its higher price, the HF-2 is considered a worthy studio investment due to its low noise and high bandwidth. However, power consumption could be a concern, suggesting the need for a mains adaptor. Overall, the HF-2 is a top contender that could render other flangers outdated.

Boss in Mistress territory

The HF-2 is more or less a Mistress from Boss but with a few exceptions: It lacks the range filter but has a manual control to adjust the delay time. And in contrast to the Electric Mistress the flanging effect is quite subtle and it is as often mentioned more 'above' the tone due to the shifted octave. I really like it but personally couldn't stand the boss buffer. (i see the need for gain staging and use buffers a lot)

This gets more use and attention than I thought it would.

I just love how much more noticeable this is over the standard Boss Flanger. I wanted a Flanger sound that was reminiscent of Brian Eno's work on the Heroes album, even though I mainly play metal. It's got a nice higher Frequency that doesn't overwhelm, but is just high enough to now you're on the airplane! This will help you sould like you're flying! Love it.

Hidden gem of flanger family

If you are willing to get a flanger then forget about the most popular units which are available on market nowadays. Just get a HF-2 because it simply beats out: Boss (BF-2 / BF-3), MXR all iterations including famous EVH Signature Flanger, Strymons, A/DA, Ibanez, Maxon and any other flanger you know.

Yes, it's been hiding in Boss line since it was introduced and I often wonder how come Boss decided to discontinue it in 1995. I have the MiJ version from 1986; it is so warm, natural, lush, noiseless and tweakable. No other flanger does what HF-2 is capable of, really. It's not that expensive, too - I got my in mint condition for 50$.

jimmarchi1

they do sound good, but the A/DA is the classic for a reason and I am not sure it bests out the Ibanez units which are sweet too... and the king of 'em all, the mu-tron foot flanger, wow, rare but amazing... the HF-2 is cool as hell, but I dunno if it beats 'em all

cwirus88

Hi there, jimmarch1! It is of course my subjective point of view. After trying lots of flangers I've chosen this one. Great for you if you like other ones, they are great pedals without any doubt, too!

Vintage sounds and versatility.

Just bought it three weeks ago and i couldn't find a tone that i didn't love. It has a little noise and adds some colour to my tone but that's precisely what you expect to find in a analog modulation like this.
