Description

Emerging from the '90s, the Boss PN-2 Tremolo/Pan has managed to maintain its charm among musicians despite its short production lifespan. Its successor, the TR-2, lacks the PN-2's signature stereo outputs and panning effects, making the PN-2 a coveted piece of gear. With its Rate and Depth controls and a 4-way Mode switch, the PN-2 offers an impressive array of sound options. Whether you prefer Pan-sawtooth, Pan-square, Trem-sawtooth, or Trem-square wave options, this pedal brings unparalleled versatility to your setup.

Key Features:

  • Stereo outputs for diverse soundscapes
  • Panning effects for added depth and texture
  • Rate and Depth controls for precise sound shaping
  • 4-way Mode switch, offering Pan-sawtooth, Pan-square, Trem-sawtooth, and Trem-square wave options for greater sound variety

Boss PN-2 Review Vintage Tremolo Pan Effects Pedal

guitarcommand.com

The Boss PN-2 Tremolo/Pan pedal is a unique piece of gear that's become a collector's favorite due to its rarity and vintage charm. While it excels in delivering warm tremolo and captivating pan effects, especially for those intrigued by the '90s shoegaze sound, it isn't without flaws. The pedal tends to produce a noticeable rhythmic hiss, which can elevate to a click with increased gain—a potential dealbreaker for purists. Though modern digital units may offer quieter and more versatile options, the PN-2's simplicity and dedicated functionality hold an appeal for those seeking a straightforward, albeit noisy, vintage effect.

This was the first track I 'officially' recorded as part of my CCCL project (aka: Chris Carter's Chemistry Lessons). It was made in 2007 with a Gameboy ASP running a couple of Nanoloop sequences: into a Boss PQ-4 parametric EQ, mono out: into a Boss PN-2 Panner (square-wave pan setting), stereo out: into a Boss RV-5 reverb (Gate setting), stereo out > into a Boss DD-6 digital delay (modified), stereo out: into a Mac G5 recording (via MOTU 828 mkII audio interface) into Apple Soundtrack Pro. All realtime tweakery (mostly the PQ-4 + DD-6) and no post-pro no editing.

Yumi Nakashima is confirmed to use the Boss PN-2 Tremolo/Pan pedal, not the Boss TR-2 as previously mentioned. This distinction is evident from a photograph by Kuno2 on Flickr, featuring the pedal's light aqua green color and its three white, inline knobs, unlike the dark green and triangular array of the TR-2. Additionally, the PN-2's unique stereo input and output labeling further verifies this identification.
