Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Brainworx (Plugin Alliance) ACME Audio Opticom XLA-3 Plug-in.

Features and functionality

  • The plugin's wet-dry mix control is a tiny screw under the GR meter, making it hard to adjust or recall settings accurately.

    Source
  • The knobs have dual functions: pulling the input knob activates a -15db pad, while pulling the output knob toggles stereo link mode, creating potential confusion.

    Source
  • The stereo link feature affects compression across channels, with linked mode providing more "glue" and unlinked mode offering transparency at the risk of center image smearing.

    Source
  • Users highlight the Opticom XLA-3's capability to effectively run as a parallel compressor, enhancing thickness in mixes without overpowering the original signal.

    Source
  • Users appreciate the Opticom XLA-3 for its versatile input/output saturation, allowing precise control over coloration, unlike some other Plugin Alliance compressors.

    Source

User experience

  • Many users find the interface illegible, with critical settings like stereo unlinking and pad activation not visually clear at a glance.

    Source
  • It’s noted for adding desirable coloration to audio, making it a preferred choice for those looking to add warmth and character to their mixes.

    Source
  • Owners note that the compressor excels in thickening drum busses, especially when used in conjunction with parallel compression techniques.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The plugin is noted to be CPU intensive, potentially impacting performance on less powerful systems.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Users compare the compressor to the Avalon 737, though specific tonal similarities are not detailed.

    Source
  • One user prefers the Opticom XLA-3 for its unique tonal coloration over other Plugin Alliance compressors, suggesting a distinct place in a mix engineer's toolkit.

    Source
  • Some owners mention the Opticom XLA-3 as having a unique warmth compared to Plugin Alliance's Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor, preferring it for adding character to mixes.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Despite interface issues, the compressor is a go-to for bass, offering unique tonal characteristics distinct from typical compressors.

    Source
  • Owners appreciate the Opticom XLA-3 for its ability to saturate transients and enhance thiccness in parallel compression, particularly with guitar tracks.

    Source
  • The Opticom XLA-3 is favored for enhancing vocal warmth in a mix, particularly in genres needing rich, dynamic vocals such as soul and R&B.

One of the best compressor plugins I've ever heard.

This is insanely good, with my budget I probably would not pay 300$ for it. But I got it much cheaper on a sale. So if you're on a budget, you better go and find something cheaper out there or go with the stock ones of your DAW (by the way, Logic Pro X has fantastic ones). But if you need a professional great sounding compressor plug-in, you can't go wrong picking this!

i use this all the time on persussion its one of the smoothest compressors ive ever used!

i use this all the time on precussion and drums some time its one of the smoothest compresors out there!

Immense

This thing is just immense. It energises drums in the most incredible way, and makes them sound beefed up, and all the best qualities exaggerated in the most natural effortless sounding way. Doesn't look like much, but what a sound !!

Another winning 'character' compressor plugin.

I've enver used the ACME hardware but people love it or ahte it. I happen to like the emulation. I think its pretty damn cool. It reminds me a bit of an old Altec unit but maybe its just the Altec green and distinctive meters that make me think that. We are all susceptible to psychoacoustics. Anyway, this is a cool vocal compressor when you want something vintage and 'effecty' -- gives you something different than a virtual LA-2A but totally valid and cool. You just better like what it does because its basically slow, slower or molasses with time constants and it just does what it does.

I really like the three curve settings on this compressor. No matter what material you’re dealing with, one of the three curves always gives you the response you’re looking for. Especially on drum busses it achieves such a great punch with perfect transients when I set the response curve to slow. I also love the harmonic distortion when you start pushing the input, and having the option to use only that feature without the gain reduction section is awesome!

Used on "When the Curtain Falls", as stated by mix engineer Al Sutton in this January 2019 Sound on Sound interview.

"I also had the Opticom in the bass for parallel compression. In this case I'll run that really dirty and blend it back in. I did this with one of the guitar tracks as well, the 'Guitar SC' track, but in this case I used the plug-in version of the Opticom. I'll really drive the plug-in and mix the result in underneath for some harmonic enhancement. I added some reverb on some of the guitars with the Avid ReVibe and added some additional effect with the SoundToys Crystallizer, but that was it. I didn't use outboard on the guitars, it was just straight into the board and then to the mix bus."
