  • Sound quality not unanimously considered the best available

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail.

Features and functionality

  • The older big box version is noted for being picky about power supplies and can be noisy if not properly powered.

    Source
  • The Holy Grail Plus offers control over blend and decay time, providing a more realistic reverb than the one-knob nano version.

    Source
  • The Holy Grail's Hall reverb is described as dark and moody, ideal for ambient music, yet it doesn’t muddy fast passages.

    Source
  • The Flerb setting becomes most usable at or below 9 o'clock on the dial, providing subtle movement similar to a tape delay flutter control.

    Source
  • The Neo version offers a plate reverb instead of the Nano's flerb, despite both sharing similar spring and hall settings.

    Source
  • Owners find the lack of time control on the reverb settings a limitation, often leading them to upgrade to the Holy Grail Plus for more versatility.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Holy Grail is compared to the Keeley Omni Reverb, which offers a more useful plate reverb instead of the unique "flerb" mode.

    Source
  • The Holy Grail was replaced by a Strymon Flint after 20 years on one owner's board, indicating a preference for more modern features.

    Source
  • The Spring reverb on the Holy Grail offers a distinct, recognizable sound that differs from traditional spring reverbs like those in Fender Princetons.

    Source
  • Users compare the Holy Grail to the Line 6 Verbzilla, noting the latter's superior sound and broader options.

    Source

User experience

  • Some users find the pedal prone to feedback and describe it as having a "peaky" sound.

    Source
  • Users appreciate the Holy Grail for its simplicity, referring to it as a reliable, "set and forget" tool for musicians who prefer focusing on playing rather than constant tweaking.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Owners prefer the Holy Grail for fast-paced music due to its ability to stay in the background without overwhelming the dry signal.

    Source
  • The flerb setting, despite its reputation, is appreciated for clean single-note melodies but deemed unsuitable for rhythm chord work.

Critic Reviews

Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail

soundonsound.com

The Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail is a straightforward digital reverb pedal offering three reverb types: Spring, Hall, and the unique Flerb. Its simplicity and usability make it appealing, particularly for clean guitar players. However, its mono output and slight background hiss may deter studio enthusiasts, while the fixed modulation of Flerb could be divisive. Though marketed as a 'Holy Grail,' it may be more aptly described as a solid and uncomplicated reverb option.

holy moly

It's a bit overrated, I think, I don't know if it deserves the cult status it has. The sweet spot is reverb at 12 o'clock, spring setting. Below that it's too subtle, above the dry signal comes down. Sounds great, I use it a lot in the studio, but at the end of the day it's a lil' digital reverb in a kickass vintage housing.

Wonderful reverb, great for filling out sound

The Holy Grail features three types of reverb: hall, spring, and flerb, which is a flange+reverb setting. Each setting sounds great and fills out the tone of whatever one is playing very well. It can be used for ambient swells or delay work, or to round out a driven sound. The amount of reverb is modifiable, and the pedal could not be easier to use. I recommend this pedal very much for the price for those looking for a professional sound.

I'm tottaly sure that this is what Im lookin for

I always Loved to use reverb effect on my guitar but for real I dont like many buttons on any pedal. While I was playing Psychedelic songs I loved to use Hall of Fame but nowadays I'm really searchin' for a simple and great way for a Reverb sound like Holy Grail Classic

5 stars for all it's done, but move on if you can.

This was always present for so many years even though FAR better reverb pedals have come along I can't rate lower because it served me so well for so many years. It does just what it says on the tin. There are far better reverb pedals available now (hell, in my collection-see Strymon BigSky! ) but this one will always hold a special place in my heart. Can't bring myself to sell them...

tinusbolus

Nice, warm sounds.

Great reverb. There are better reverbpedals, but the warm sound is really great for a pedal in this pricerange. I like The sounds very much. Only con is that the pedal with the knob over 3 o' clock quite useless sounds.....

kaden_summers

Very nice pedal

I like this reverb a lot, and it replaced a $45 tri-reverb pedal I used to have, so by comparison, I thought that this thing was the best I'd ever heard.

henrik_haugsnes_kaupang

Simple and subtle

it does not colour my sound, but fills it out nicely... works best through Marshalls in the loop!

deadtom_

Good Basic Reverb

Does everything you want from a basic reverb. I will upgrade to something with more control of pre-delay in the future.

My Sound

Have used this pedal for over 15 years, will always be on my pedalboard

Sons of heaven!
