Review: Fender's New J Mascis Telecaster

consequence.net

Fender’s J Mascis Telecaster pays homage to the alt-rock legend with its striking “Bottle Rocket Blue” finish and vintage specs. It captures the essence of Mascis’ iconic sound, thanks to its unique top-loader bridge and custom single-coil pickups, which deliver a versatile tonal range. However, while the aesthetics and craftsmanship shine, some players may find the guitar’s specific vintage features a departure from traditional Telecasters, potentially limiting its appeal. Overall, this model is a solid choice for fans of Dinosaur Jr. and those looking to channel Mascis’ legendary leads, though its niche elements might not suit every guitarist’s style.

Review: J Mascis Telecaster - Mixdown Magazine

mixdownmag.com.au

Fender’s J Mascis Telecaster is a nostalgic nod to vintage vibes, featuring custom-designed pickups that capture the essence of the '50s Tele snarl. The sparkly blue finish and chrome mirror pickguard make it visually striking, while the beefy neck shape and unique top-loading bridge enhance playability for expressive bends. However, true single coils do introduce some buzz, especially with fuzz pedals, and the vintage-inspired design might not suit modern shredders. It’s a delightful, character-filled instrument that stands out in any collection, though it may not be for everyone. Overall, it's a compelling choice for fans of Dinosaur Jr. and vintage tones alike.

Custom shop level road worn tele with a fantastic color

The color is bottle rocket metallic blue flake. J Mascis liked the color on some Pearl drum set he saw and had his 58 Tele painted this way. Looks spectacular in person- better than most sparkle flake finishes I've seen. The road worn look is restrained and perfect on the maple fretboard. It annoys me when the relic-ers go overboard and make a fretboard look moldy or rotten. The neck feel is chunkier than most C shapes but very comfortable. I've read about QC issues for some others with the frets but that was not the case with mine. There was a very slight sanding required on one edge of the truss rod skunk stripe on the back of the neck - but that was not a deal breaker, just within the expectations for a MIM lately. The pickups are high output with an out of phase center position. They sound great with distortion or Fuzz- recommend Hizumitas. There are mods out there where you can install a push-pull for in and out of phase modes. Overall a very solid Tele. If you can get it for sub1K, you get a deal.

Discussed at length in this September 2, 2021 Guitar.com interview.

So then, what on earth is the high priest of the Fender Offset doing bringing out that most un-Jazzmastery of instruments, a signature Telecaster? Well, in truth the Tele has always been there, behind the scenes, playing a very important role.

“I like what I play on it, y’know,” Mascis shrugs when we ask him what he likes about the Telecaster. “I use it for a lot of leads and stuff. If I play that guitar and then another guitar, I usually like what I played better on the Tele. I’m not sure how, but I think I play differently on every guitar I have.”
