PROS

  • Versatile sound range from one compact amp

  • Surprisingly loud for its size

  • Durable build, described as "tough as steel"

  • Offers good value, especially on the used market

  • Built-in effects add to versatility

  • Suitable for beginners and everyday use

CONS

  • Overdriven sound lacks dynamism

  • "Insane mode" not practical or pleasing for all users

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Line 6 Spider III 15.

Features and functionality

  • The onboard effects are not intuitive; users report the chorus effect can unexpectedly switch to a phaser during adjustments.

    Source
  • The amp includes hidden features like a noise gate and boost circuit, which aren't immediately apparent to many users.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Through a good cabinet, the Spider III's metal tones on the green insane channel can rival higher-end models like the 6505 combo.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The amp's effects and presets are beneficial for beginners without pedals, offering a range of sounds for experimentation.

    Source
  • For thrash metal, scoop the mids, set bass/treble to 3-4 o'clock, and drive to max for an aggressive sound.

    Source
  • In band settings, increase mid levels to avoid being drowned out by drums and bass, despite it not sounding ideal solo.

    Source
  • A common setup for metal involves turning the channel volume to max, with gain and bass slightly elevated while mids are slightly reduced.

    Source
  • Adjust treble cautiously; it enhances "bite" but also amplifies string and pick noise, which can be distracting.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners consistently find the amp's controls counter-intuitive and require significant tweaking to achieve desirable tones, especially for rock/metal.

    Source
  • The "insane" channel is often described as overly buzzy; owners suggest sticking to the "crunch" or "metal" channels for a clearer tone.

    Source

Build quality

  • The materials are prone to attracting dust, leading to a worn appearance over time unless maintained carefully.

Good for beginners home play

I bought this amp to start learning how to play guitar. The clean channel doesn’t work when the neck pickup of my Les Paul is turned on. Maybe this issue is present only in my amp, but my previous guitar, a Stratocaster with single pickups, worked fine.
After improving my musical skills, I found that this amp doesn't sound "interesting." I started wanting more.

Great, versatile guitar practice amp

Amazing amp for practicing at home! The sound is actually fairly loud considering its size, and has multiple different settings, including crunch and distortion, as well as some simple chorus, flanger, delay and reverb effects. (Sadly, as I got mine second hand, the "insane" setting is not working so I can't comment on that, but everything else is in working order). The sound quality is pretty good, I'd use this amp for recording too. But yeah, a great and cheap amp for practicing at home, or even some smaller jam sessions!

Preferred Settings + Usage:

As I mentioned, it's a very versatile amp. My favourite setting at the moment is "Crunch", with a low drive and some tape delay, but of course this is always changing.

Great quality amp

This amp is spectacular. If you mess around with it, you can get some great tones out of it. Cheers.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Drive, Bass, and Chain Volume at 12 O’ Clock, Mids all the way down, Treble all the way up.

My first amp

This was my very first electric guitar amp back in a day. Had a great time with it. Small and portable, tough as steel and good power for home playing. Cleans were ok, overdriven sound was not very dynamic, and the insane mode was just insane (not in a good way), but the cleans are pretty usable. Now you can find these dirt cheap on the used market, and I think it's still a good purchase for a begginer or anybody who just wants a cheap, small and rugged practice amp.

Amazing amp

Nice little practice amp. Lots of built in effects. Gets really loud and I love it. My everyday use amp.

workhorse

Workhorse in my multi amp indulgence set up at home, and very useful as a back-up amp when gigging/rehearsing. Weighs almost nothing, so easy to move. Having a few presets is a nice plus, allthough i don'ty think very much of the sounds themselves. But hey, for a beginner this a truely great amp, if you can get one 2nd hand for a nice price, it will serve you right for some time to come...

The Popular One

Ah the Line 6 Spider 3 amp.. The amp literally every guitar has at the start of their music careers. Almost everyone in my high school had one haha. While I do not recommend pursuing your sound in one of these amps, they're cool to experiment with the different tones, knobs, and effects it has.

skyler_hughet

First amp.

Surprisingly very loud. Has been used by me in my first failed band and multiple times by my lead guitarist live in my current band. Effects sound okay, unfortunately no foot pedal for them or channels.

austinnoise

useful

My first guitar amp, I now only use it clean or with the preloaded effects for my mic.

jimmy_bergmooser

First Amp

Works well as a first amp. I rarely use it now since I've gotten more expensive tube amps, but it is nice to keep around as a practice amp.
