Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Marshall JMP Model 1992 Super Bass (1967-1975).

Build quality

  • The 1968 Marshall Super Bass is appreciated for its unmodified chassis, lacking added features like effects loops or master volumes, preserving its vintage appeal.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Super Bass is noted for its low-end focus and is versatile enough to achieve classic rock tones with slight tweaking.

    Source
  • For collectors, maintaining all original parts, even if non-functional, maximizes value, allowing buyers to decide on restoration.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Owners find the Bass spec flattens the frequency response by reducing midrange, making it ideal for genres like Sabbath-style riff-heavy rock.

    Source
  • The same PCB was used for the Marshall 1959, 1992, and 2203 models, highlighting the interchangeability of parts between Super Lead and Super Bass.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • An owner replaced original Greenbacks in a vintage cab with WGS Green Berets for better durability and cost-effectiveness without sacrificing tone.

    Source
  • Converting a Super Lead to Super Bass involves changing the .68uf cathode cap to ≥220uf and modifying coupling caps from .022uf to .1uF.

    Source
  • To make the Bright channel less aggressive, cut the bright cap on the Bright volume pot and adjust the Presence circuit.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Original 1968 Super Bass amps can fetch up to $10,000, but expect to negotiate; selling platforms like Reverb might inflate prices due to fees.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • It's essential to replace original electrolytic capacitors for reliability, as modern ones are more durable and quieter, despite collectors valuing original parts.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Superlead Normal channel is 98% similar to the Super Bass, so expect minimal tonal differences between the two.

A classic Marshall

My Super Bass is from 1971. This is the amp that John Frusciante uses, since a long time. I use it with guitar, and it's just an unmanageable monster, it's beyond loud. For achieve the "right" Marshall sound, you have to set the volume at 6-7, and it's just too much for almost any venue. You can use an attenuator, or something like that, otherwise it's impossible to use. You can use it at 2, but it's just a clean amp, and it doesn't make sense at all. If you use it at a proper volume, and push it with a simple overdrive, you have the iconic sound you heard on many records.

My first amp was a really nice amp, actually: at the time, nobody really wanted ’70’s amps. It was a 1971 Marshall Super Bass: it had an amazing tone, but it was nowhere near loud enough for me and it was always breaking.
