Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Neunaber Iconoclast Speaker Emulator.

Comparisons

  • The Iridium provides amp-like sound and impulse response cabinet simulation, while the Iconoclast is strictly a cabinet simulator without amp simulation.

    Source
  • While the Iconoclast is praised for its compact size and quality, alternative options like the Micro Dark offer tube preamp features with a versatile CabSim.

    Source
  • The Digitech CabDryVR is considered a cheaper alternative, though the Iconoclast's stereo headphone output is a notable advantage for travel-friendly setups.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Iridium offers emulations of three different amps with selectable cabinets, unlike the Iconoclast which only simulates a 4x12 cabinet.

    Source
  • The Iconoclast allows for stereo output, which users find transformative in live settings, providing a new dimension to their sound.

    Source
  • The Iconoclast integrates seamlessly with a range of pedals, including compressors and drive pedals, to enhance its tonal output without requiring a preamp.

    Source
  • The Iconoclast can't be used as a load box but works well when paired with an amp-in-a-box style drive pedal or a preamp for amp simulation.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Iconoclast users benefit from its small footprint and headphone usage, but Iridium's amp-like performance is preferred for a more authentic playing experience.

    Source
  • The device excels with clean tones but also handles dirt effectively, making it versatile for both studio recording and live performances.

    Source
  • Ideal for musicians who rely on pedalboards for tone-shaping, making it suitable for smaller gigs where amp volume control is crucial.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Users note that the Iconoclast can be easily resold close to its purchase price, mitigating potential financial loss when upgrading to an Iridium.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Users have successfully used presets from the Neunaber forums to emulate specific amp sounds, like a Fender, enhancing its versatility.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners appreciate the simplicity and plug-n-play nature, contrasting it with more complex gear like the Kemper, which some find challenging to bond with.

    Source
  • Some users express concerns about relying heavily on sound engineers for tone control when using the Iconoclast in live settings.

Neunaber Iconoclast Speaker Emulator Review | Performer Mag

performermag.com

The Neunaber Iconoclast Speaker Emulator is a versatile tool that brilliantly combines the simplicity of a stompbox with the adaptability of a plugin. It's praised for its realistic speaker sound, intuitive EQ controls, and stereo capabilities, making it ideal for both live and studio settings. While the editing software offers extensive options, it may overwhelm less experienced users. Overall, at $249, it's a great buy for musicians looking to enhance their pedalboard's direct sound.

Quick Hit: Neunaber Iconoclast - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Neunaber Iconoclast Speaker Emulator is a compact, space-saving device that impresses with its realistic speaker simulations, ideal for practice and recording in tight spaces. It's as small as an MXR pedal and features a straightforward stereo I/O array that easily connects to various audio outputs. The device uses a unique filtering system rather than impulse response, allowing its three EQ controls to adeptly mimic different speaker dynamics. While it excels at handling clean tones and works well with pedals, it may lack the heft expected from a traditional amp, especially when dealing with chaotic styles that rely on feedback or heavy speaker compression. Nonetheless, for those prioritizing convenience and versatility in limited spaces, the Iconoclast is a valuable tool.

Insane

I only just got this pedal, and I feel like I have only begun to comprehend how much this will improve my recordings. Guitar and bass are strictly studio instruments for me, and I don't live in a place where I can blast noise, so something like this is a godsend. Love that it has balanced outputs and can go straight into my interface! And the software really lets you get into tweaking it with things like the stereo enhancer and the noise gate settings. Might be able to get rid of my noise gate! Really love what Neunaber are doing.

Authentic cab simulation.

This paired with the Neunaber Neuron makes pedalboard di capable. I can simply take my board to any gig and plug it into the PA. However my main use for this is for practicing in my own house through a bose speaker.

Does a darn good job of emulating an amp

I've used this on 2 gigs now that have required me to plug straight into a mixer. Both gigs, this pedal did it's job very well, especially on the first gig when the next band borrowed my guitar without borrowing my board. The difference in tone was quite immense

Incredibly useful

Guitarists / recording enthusiasts, here's something worth your time. During pre production for this new record, I've been experimenting with direct recording amps with a @suhrcustom Reactive Load box and various impulse responses. While there are lots of quality impulses available, I find it a little bit time consuming and sometimes fatiguing to sift through folders of various microphone combinations and placements, etc... Over the last few months I've often thought, wouldn't it be great if I could dial in a cabinet with the same flexibility as dialling in an amp or pedal? Neunaber Audio has done it and it rules, hard.

The Iconoclast is not based on impulse responses and the fixed parameters that typically come with the territory. The 3 band EQ allows you to essentially determine the size of the cabinet (low), the mid frequency / dampening response (mid), and top end roll off (high) which emulates the difference between various speakers types. You can do everything from dial in a tight 1x12 type feel with the high end detail of a Creamback all the way to a 4x12 style thump in the bottom end with the same mid range / high end roll off as a V30. They also put a noise gate in which is super useful. There is also a software editor if you're the type to get under the hood and this thing even does a really nice stereo spread with only a mono input.

If you guys are direct recording with amplifiers and are frustrated by menu diving or the confusion of what even sounds balanced or "right" when dialling in sounds, I would highly recommend checking out the Iconoclast. Shout out to Neunaber for sending this over. I'm really impressed with the design concept on this thing
