Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Neunaber Neuron.

Features and functionality

  • Each EQ band functions independently, diverging from typical pedal designs. The "tight" knob adjusts a high pass filter from 80Hz to 400Hz when fully turned.

    Source
  • The Neuron's noise gate has a gradual fade-out instead of a sharp cutoff, which can be annoying and cause feedback when stacking with other drives.

    Source
  • Offers six onboard presets for various tones, from clean to high gain settings, enhancing versatility for different musical styles without additional pedals.

    Source
  • Includes a one-knob compressor, cab simulation, and a noise gate, bundling multiple features in a single unit for comprehensive sound shaping.

    Source
  • The Neuron's controls are highly sensitive, making it challenging to dial in tones; even small adjustments can significantly alter the sound.

    Source
  • The Neuron is praised for its broad range from light overdrive/boost to high gain distortion, though there is a significant learning curve due to its extensive functionality.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report issues with stacking other drive pedals in front of the Neuron, as it doesn't handle additional drive well, especially with significant EQ adjustments.

    Source
  • The Neuron Commander program can be finicky with USB-MIDI setups, but when functioning, it allows full 24 patch editing.

    Source
  • Some users find the Neuron's sound slightly digital compared to analog preamps, which may not appeal to those preferring analog tones for drive pedals.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Ideal for achieving tight, djent tones on a 7-string guitar in drop F tuning, showcasing its versatility across different tunings and styles.

    Source
  • Recommended for users needing MIDI presets for varied gain sounds, enhancing setups involving other complex gear like the CBA Brothers.

    Source
  • Pairing the Neuron with a tube screamer can produce favorable tones, enhancing its versatility for achieving cleaner sounds when stacked.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Outperforming the Strymon Sunset, the Neuron is praised for its sound quality and "hyperrealistic" tone, challenging the stigma against digital pedals.

    Source
  • Struggles to achieve vintage rock tones like AC/DC or ZZ Top, with a more modern sound profile suitable for clean and high gain settings.

    Source
  • Owners suggest the Chase Bliss Brothers as a versatile alternative, offering transparent and midrange boost, drive, and fuzz options with MIDI preset control, at a lower price than the Neuron.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Some users have experienced MIDI connectivity issues with certain devices like the Boss ES-5, but others have successfully used MIDI controllers like DMC Micro and Boss MS-3.

Fantastic, Versatile and Overlooked pedal

With the ability to create and alter presets in depth and access them. along with various Parameters using midi, this pedal is a must have for all rigs. If you need a small profile EQ, Compressor, Gate, Boost, Drive, or even a Speaker Simulator for plugging in your instrument DI, this pedal has it all. The ability to create and store 6 presets on the unit itself allow for you to run this pedal by itself on any sized board, so that you may access various different tones and EQ from the preset footswitch on the pedal. Running the pedal through Midi, however, allows for up to 24 presets to be recalled, which is more than enough to make presets for nearly any amount of custom presets you would effectively be using.

Each one of the tones via the EQ section have an incredibly wide range; with Lows, Mids, Highs, along with Presence and a Tightness control. All of these may be interacted with by using the Tilt control as well, which lets you fine-tune the pedal to match with your particular amp or tone you need.

The Drive ranges from being entirely transparent to a full-on Marshall sounding distortion, with everything in between. I've spent over a decade trying to get a specific drive tone that I've had in mind, and with this pedal, I've been able to dial in exactly what my rig needs and what I've been looking for for so long. 9.5/10 pedal, would recommend highly. Especially for the considerably cheap price.

Solid alternative to a full amp.

I use this pedal both as a clean boost/eq for my amp and also in conjunction with a Neunaber Iconoclast when I got without an amp. This makes my pedalboard di capable and I can basically play any venue with a decent pa without an amp if I have too. The Neuron is capable of both crushing metal tones and glassy leads.
