Critic Reviews

Novation Supernova II

soundonsound.com

The Novation Supernova II is a sleek, powerful synth that impresses with its authentic analog emulations and user-friendly interface. Offering up to 48-note polyphony and a myriad of sound-shaping options, it stands out for retaining program-specific effects in multitimbral mode, a rarity in its class. Its sturdy build and attractive design complement the robust sound engine, which includes three oscillators per program and an 18-type filter section. However, the reverb could use improvement, and the small screen and manual might frustrate some users. Overall, it's a versatile, feature-rich synthesizer that offers excellent value for money.

Huge sound and crystal clear fx! One unit is never enough...

The SuperNova II (2000) was available in 24, 36 and 48-voice models with additional 12 or 24-voice expansion boards. Available again in a 3U rack-mount format, the SuperNova II was also available in a 61-note performance keyboard version with velocity and aftertouch, enabling sound tweaking during live performance. FM synthesis capability was included along with ring modulation, dual analogue inputs and a 42-band vocoder. An 8-part arpeggiator was also on-board and in its full version the product offered 8-part multitimbrality and 48-voice polyphony, with 57 and 2304 oscillators running simultaneously.

great old Synthesizer

Supernova 2 this is old school sound, this is what sounds worthy! This is something that was released not just to make money, but in order to bring joy to people and provide high-quality sound.

Great design, great controls, great 808 and 909 style drum kits, cool arpeggiators, good filters (but not good enough to squeal with joy, I know better ones). The vocoder on paper is good, but in practice it turned out to be the worst of all I know. Sounds fat, in places like DCO. The DAC chip constantly crashes (I'm an electronics engineer) and I found an old problem, a new alternative. There is a video on my YouTube channel. https://youtu.be/MZNFcR22PZs

Compared to later ultranovas, the sound is more correct. And after replacing the DAC with a new type, it began to sound even cooler. Solid, reliable (except for the old problem, which is no more and I think will not be in the future), beautiful. Basses, leads, pads, arps are bright. Ideally combined with Yamaha AN1x, Access Virus TI1, Clavia Nord Lead 3 and Yamaha Montage workstation. SN2 it's a funny blue box.

Its a BENTLEY in a world of VA

Its very very epic synth from many VA. Today it very actual in work! Yes - it have few waveforms.. But beautiful effects (exclude reverb), mighty filters (its better filters on hardware VA), deep architecture with easy manipulation. Have enough power for very nice bass. Beautiful pads, leads. I change many VA synths, and also other Novation synths (include modern) - Supernova II its a brilliant in VA world.
