Oktava MKL5000

soundonsound.com

The Oktava MKL-5000 is a striking vintage-style multi-pattern tube microphone that delivers a rich, full-bodied sound with a strong valve character, ideal for rock vocals. While it impresses with its larger-than-life presence and versatile polar patterns, it suffers from sensitivity to mechanical vibrations, making a shockmount essential. The microphone's aesthetics and distinctive sound might appeal to some, but it doesn't quite match the smoothness of higher-end models like the Neumann M149. For those seeking a unique mic with vintage appeal at a reasonable price, the MKL-5000 is worth considering, though its technical specifications are overshadowed by competitors like the Rode K2.

Go-to mic

It's a tube mic with 3 patterns and built-in low freq filter. It's huge, and heavy and has it's own external power source. Really nice, vibey, maybe too open in "presence" zone of 2-5k, but detailed and warm enough. Use it for vocals, acoustic instruments - it will do it's job. For approximately 500$ it's a great deal!
