Critic Reviews

Aston Spirit

soundonsound.com

The Aston Microphones Spirit is a versatile and robust multi-pattern microphone that impresses with its clean and natural sound. Built in the UK with high-quality components, it offers excellent value, particularly for vocals, acoustic guitar, and percussion. The innovative design, including a durable stainless-steel cage and transformer-balanced output, ensures both longevity and superior sound quality. While there's little to criticize, potential buyers are advised to test it for personal vocal suitability. Overall, the Spirit stands out as a reliable and cost-effective choice against pricier boutique alternatives.

Aston Microphones Spirit Microphone review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Aston Microphones Spirit is a versatile, robust microphone that impresses with its smooth frequency response and added brightness, making it suitable for various recording scenarios. Its switchable polar patterns and solid build are highlights, but to maximize its potential, a quality shockmount is recommended. While it offers a detailed sound, particularly for vocals and acoustic instruments, its proximity effect is less pronounced than other condensers, making it favorable for close micing. Overall, the Spirit is a worthy contender for studio use, offering reliable performance at a reasonable price.

positive

Aston Microphones Spirit Review

musictech.com

The Aston Microphones Spirit impresses as a versatile, budget-friendly large-diaphragm condenser, rivaling pricier models. Its multi-pattern capability adds flexibility, making it a great addition to any mic locker. While it may not match the weighty bottom end of a Neumann U47, its top-end articulation shines on drums and vocals. A touch of brightness on electric guitars can be tamed, yet its adaptability ensures it excels across various applications. In short, the Spirit is a standout choice for those seeking quality and versatility without breaking the bank.

Project Studio Ready

It is a cardoid heart shaped pattern mic that is great when you want warm clean vocals to work with. If you have an untreated room it has a hi and low cut off switch and the proximity blocks out lots of noise to begin with. The only set back is finding a good shock mount. I ordered 2 before getting it right. Get a Rycote USM and don't try to cut corners and order any other type even if the seller or vendor says their bargain shockmount is compatible. I had to rig felt taps to keep it from sliding lol. But, the Rycote USM was the soulmate to the Aston Spirit even though the two compaines had a partnership divorce. :)

Preferred Settings + Usage:

0db, Flat and Cardoid for vocals. I'll sometimes use the low cut during the day and loud construction is happening.

Love, love, love....

So I was a little skeptical about ordering this mic at first because at the time Aston Microphones was such a new company.. A friend referred me to them and on a hunch I bought the spirit. This thing is awesome, after playing around with it for a few days, it quickly became one of my immediate "go to" mics. Love this mic and the company, Plus the durability on this thing is impressive. 9/10

Game-Changing

I bought this microphone about a year ago and have been using it on a plethora of instruments through an arsenal of pres and outboard gear. Beautiful and versatile color and frequency response rivaling those $1000 mics, but only for a fraction of the price!

This beauty is listed at $399.

Decent!

I got this microphone "used" however it seems it was not used even once. The quality is great and the design is unique. The microphone certainly is well suited for a reflection filter.

A MICROPHONE... FROM THE UK?!

Wonderfully clean condenser with a clear, flat frequency response. I use it on virtually everything, particularly like it on acoustic guitars, mandolins and douche-bag precussion.

Best value for money 2018

Best mic I have at the moment for applications like vocals, or acoustic guitar.

Gritty

A bit harsh and gritty. Works nice for industrial / rock / techno. P's and S's are too harsh though.

I love using gear that friends have come up with - I know how great they are, and it translates into the product itself. Aston microphones do sound great, they are tough and industrial. With an Aston you know you can drop a brick on it and just pick it back up knowing it’s gonna be working just fine. But also, I really love the people behind it.
