    Source

User experience

  • Owners highlight the inability to move, rename, or delete samples directly on the SP-16, requiring computer access for file management.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Owners suggest it’s a good value around $500-$700, but overpriced at the original MSRP or higher.

Critic Reviews

Pioneer Toraiz SP-16

soundonsound.com

The Pioneer Toraiz SP-16 is a vibrant, DJ-friendly sampler designed for live performance. Its user-friendly interface and bright layout make it a standout stage companion, while the hands-on controls offer intuitive sequencing. Although it lacks the depth of a full production workstation, its integration with DJ setups and ease of use for live improvisation shine through. The device sports a robust hardware design and offers a rich analog filter for sonic exploration. However, its high price and inability to save/load kits independently could be drawbacks. Ideal for DJs seeking an engaging live tool.

Pioneer DJ Toraiz SP-16 review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Pioneer Toraiz SP-16 stands out as an intuitive and flexible sampler with a fun workflow, making it ideal for both live performances and studio use. Its integration of Dave Smith's filter enhances sound quality, and the device's design is both sleek and functional. However, the SP-16 falls short with its lackluster built-in effects and a need for firmware updates to refine its features, such as the touchstrip functionality and additional envelope options. Despite these drawbacks, the SP-16 is a promising tool for music creators, effectively blending studio and live capabilities.

Pioneer DJ Toraiz SP-16 Review - Hardware Heaven With Top Filters

musictech.com

The Pioneer Toraiz SP-16 impresses with its combination of intuitive hardware sampling and the coveted Dave Smith Prophet-6 analogue filters. While its single-touch screen feels outdated, its robust build and ease of use make it a live performance powerhouse. Despite limited onboard effects and some inconvenience in sample loading, it stands out with eight audio outputs and solid connectivity options. More accessible than the Elektron Octatrack, and self-contained compared to Akai's MPC Touch, it’s ideal for DJs seeking to integrate samples without a laptop. Overall, it's a fun, reliable choice for hardware enthusiasts.

positive

macProVideo.com

macprovideo.com

The Pioneer Toraiz SP-16 Sampler impresses with its seamless integration of DJ and production functions, featuring high-quality pads, a 16-step sequencer, and Dave Smith Instruments filters. The intuitive touch screen and robust connectivity options bolster its appeal, though its hefty price may deter budget-conscious buyers. While slightly weighty, it's still a standout hybrid tool for serious DJs and producers seeking versatility in live and studio settings.

Price is the Only Reason It's Not a 5

The price of the Toraiz, paired with my neverending quest for a complete laptop replacement, made me dissapointed the Toraiz couldn't do polyrhythms, handle samples over 32s, or do proper MIDI recording and sequencing. That said, the DSI filter sounds fit, the large array of track LFO destinations, the ability for the LFOs to modulate live audio, and it has the best color touchscreen audio interface I've seen in hardware. For $800 it'd be a 5. At $1300+ it's not.

Embracing The Hybrid DJ

Often I've been asked whether I prefer producing or dj-ing. We're now in an era where the two are cross pollinating. I see this as one of the first machines to venture deeper into a non laptop based semi live performance. I hope Pioneer would lift the 32 second length limitation though. If you want to really do remixes you need longer samples. If layering your (cdj) tracks with added drums is your dj thing than this is your box.

James: “I’m also using this new Dave Smith SP-16 Pioneer DJ Sampler, which I’m running a load of sounds through and using a bit like an Akai MPC. It’s got additional rhythms that I can add into the mix and vocal samples that are chopped up MPC-style. It’s full of stuff that I’ve sampled from films and vocal recordings.”
