Description
Introducing the Pioneer Toraiz SP-16 Sampler, the first of its kind in the lineup of music production tools. This sampler and step sequencer is specially designed for DJs and producers alike. In a groundbreaking collaboration with the legendary synth creator Dave Smith, this innovative gear features the renowned Prophet-6 analogue filters, adding a rich, analog warmth and presence to your unique creations.
The Toraiz SP-16 Sampler is not only functional for producing but also serves as a standalone unit in the DJ booth to elevate performances. With an easy-to-navigate layout and a large touch screen, you can load samples, design patterns, add FX, loops, and manipulate their parameters to make your music truly your own.
Keeping you in control is a 7-inch, full-color touch display that provides instant access to all the info you need. With the rotary dials placed conveniently below the screen, you can effortlessly browse, select, color-code samples, and tweak their parameters.
Key Features:
- Step Sequencer: 16-step sequencer allowing up to 256 different patterns. Backlit buttons reflect the colors assigned to each sound for a visual guide.
- Tactile Performance Pads: 16 large rubber pads for layering sounds on-the-fly. Multicolor LEDs indicate what samples are in play.
- Powerful Processing Engine: Capable of playing 16 samples simultaneously, even when using time stretch, pitch bend or the amp envelope.

Price is the Only Reason It's Not a 5
The price of the Toraiz, paired with my neverending quest for a complete laptop replacement, made me dissapointed the Toraiz couldn't do polyrhythms, handle samples over 32s, or do proper MIDI recording and sequencing. That said, the DSI filter sounds fit, the large array of track LFO destinations, the ability for the LFOs to modulate live audio, and it has the best color touchscreen audio interface I've seen in hardware. For $800 it'd be a 5. At $1300+ it's not.
Embracing The Hybrid DJ
Often I've been asked whether I prefer producing or dj-ing. We're now in an era where the two are cross pollinating. I see this as one of the first machines to venture deeper into a non laptop based semi live performance. I hope Pioneer would lift the 32 second length limitation though. If you want to really do remixes you need longer samples. If layering your (cdj) tracks with added drums is your dj thing than this is your box.
lot to learn....
Maybe i jumped in over my head...Its a great sampler..just wish i was better at using it.

James: “I’m also using this new Dave Smith SP-16 Pioneer DJ Sampler, which I’m running a load of sounds through and using a bit like an Akai MPC. It’s got additional rhythms that I can add into the mix and vocal samples that are chopped up MPC-style. It’s full of stuff that I’ve sampled from films and vocal recordings.”
