Critic Reviews

PreSonus Studio One Review | PCMag

pcmag.com

PreSonus Studio One redefines the digital audio workstation experience with its intuitive workflow and powerful composition tools. While it excels in speed and usability, allowing for seamless recording and mixing, the software suffers from an outdated selection of instruments and a cluttered interface that can overwhelm users. Despite these drawbacks, its impressive features like integrated pitch correction and support for Dolby Atmos make it a strong contender in the DAW market. Overall, it’s a smart choice for musicians seeking a capable alternative to Pro Tools, though some may be wary of its shifting subscription model.

The best DAW?

I have used many DAWs in the past. My favorites are Steinberg Cubase and Ableton Live. But after trying Studio One, I have a new favorite. The developers took the best features from different DAWs. The most convenient Piano Roll is right here. Scale is also constantly helpful. You can easily record any complex melody in the desired key. I now use it as my primary DAW. I also enjoy observing how the program evolves with each major release.

Most User Friendly DAW

Most DAWs are great and the general consensus is "if you already know a DAW well there's no reason to switch to it." I abide by that philosophy, it's just that Studio One can do anything any other DAW can do, but easier and faster. There are also a couple things that Studio One does that others can't like a lot of range of undoing and redoing ( CTRL+Z ) and being able to drag plugin chains to other channels. Macros are also a reason I'd say to check it out even if you know another DAW well. Also the different templates for mixing, mastering, recording, beat making, etc are very convenient. The mastering and CD formatting / burning capabilities are a nice addition if you need that. The mastering template in general is great, I know people who use other DAWs who use Studio One to master.

So, that's pretty much it, it works.

A Versatile Daw

Long story short, I love it. This is the first DAW I ever spent money on. I felt it was time for me to use a real DAW (instead of shuffling trial versions of other DAWs). As with any DAW, you want something that offers a good workflow, community, and sound library. I was hesitant to spend money on this DAW, which is widely regarded as an "up-and-comer", but I definitely feel like I got my money's worth. The workflow is fantastic and the community is supportive. I am a novice producer (and that's being generous) but the functionality of this DAW has kept me motivated and invested in the process. I highly recommend this Presonus Studio One. It's not an up-and-comer. It's the real deal.

The most powerful and user-friendly DAW

After a very long hiatus, I am a former audio-engineer guy who was discovering and coming into the new technology and way of recording with DAW software in 2014. The one thing that attracted me to PreSonus in the day was the price-point as well as the pleasing GUI/layout/design, tutorials, and the initial ease of use for a guy just getting started. Since then, I have grown comfortable with Studio One, and I upgraded from the Producer version to Professional version in 2016. I have tried my hand working with Ableton and other DAWs, and I still prefer the layout and workflow of Studio One. It is the core of my personal studio. Especially with the release of version 4.5, the DAW is completely feature-packed.

Super free DAW!

Keeping in mind, that the numbers of possible tracks is not limited, neither for audio nor for MIDI tracks, places Studio One Prime close to Cakewalk by Bandlab, which is still the best free DAW in the world.

It is indeed not that common with freeware version of a professional DAW! You name them. What Studio One Prime offers you is to create and record music without being restricted by any limitations in terms of amount of midi/audio tracks etc. What more could you aks for?

A High-End DAW, Easy To Learn And Really Affordable

First off, the subscription based model of this DAW makes it really affordable. And that for an amazing, fully-featured DAW. It's very similar to Cubase, but just a bit more simple. It's a good DAW and I recommend it to anyone who is new and wants to get into making music, without spending a fortune.

An Accessible Pro DAW

I was using ProTools but then they decided they'd rather do the bulk of their biz with pro's and sacrifice the market share they had with work-a-day home recorders. Happily StudioOne is easy to use and reasonably priced, and while they don't really take phone calls they answer emails pretty quickly. Professionals can and do make market releases with this software, but Presonus doesn't seem to share the elitist tendencies of some other DAW makers, and so working class people like myself can access this wonderful product...

Really great DAW for serious musicians

Version 4 is a great update to an already great DAW. The upgrades to Impact XT, SampleOne XT and Presence XT is awesome, I've also purchased the Presence XT Editor upgrade: https://shop.presonus.com/Presence-XT-Editor Enabling unlimited creative possibilities with scripting and the whole shebang. IMHO this should have been included, but, I got it for a nice price, so I figured, why not... The chord track and pattern editor are both great additions, making it easier to create beats and melodies.

Best Daw that's around!

Been doing music since a while now Since 2009 been on nearly every daw there is, Pro Tools, ableton, propellerhead reason, bitwig studio, cubase, Logic, FL studio, Every one can't be compared to Studio one. Logic is load of Shite Crashes often and its only for the shit imacs? Imacs are horrible machines and over priced garbage you pay for £/$1000 for shitty specs which costs around £200 if you got same specs for Windows.. Plus Logic is slow, too much hassling about to draw some simple notes ... Bitwig studio is kinda half cool supports Both 32/64Bit plugins no matter what bit machine your using! So can use them old vintage plugins, But it was new when i tried it kept on crashing on me even tho they promosed that vst won't crash the daw.. aswel as when playing certain hits on the drum machine its out of pitch was ok Daw... Reason was my first daw was half good but same time had no audio support on the tracks, and Most of all no VST SUPPORT STILL! .. Fl studio another daw that has old crappy style e.g i make a drum pattern if i wanted to change or remove one simple kick i have to re-create whole drum pattern again so gave up, ableton was great, just everything seem slow,l the search engine on it is HORRIBLE takes least 5 good mins to search something.. Feck other Daws, Presonus studio one is PERFECT... Fastest Daw and fastest way i can get ideas down on the Daw, the search engine is Fecking amazing search something within seconds Boom "Hi hat" found, and when ever theres new version they upgrade BIG Time, even with the updates they add so much stuff worth every penny. Very easy to use aswel

Workflow beast

Probably the most intuitive DAW in the market, S1 allows its users to be the most creative without getting in the way. Everything is laid out in an easy-to-learn and understandable manner and S1 is shockingly CPU friendly and efficient compared to other DAWs. Even though it doesn't come with lots of virtual instruments out of the box, it has a decent collection of high-quality plugins for mixing, mastering, and any other audio-related purposes. FAT channel XT gives you access to high-end analog modeled compressors and EQs all within a single FAT channel mothership.

Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has used Studio One Professional to mix and master songs from 2017-2019. With exception to “The Road” and a few special guest appearance Luke Weiler played every instrument and mixed and mastered every song on “The Black And White Album”.(2017) “The Road” which starts the Album was mixed and mastered by Tony Gonzo(Fuzz Heady)/Loud and Conscious studios who luke worked with on “smile (hip hop)”, “Passing Storm” and “Out of My Head” on “Change Your Mind”.(2012) “I really like Studio One Pro because I can focus on my instrumentation and I can get a song finished without producers. Also it allows me to master and upload mastered demos right to bandcamp where fans can here demos and watch the metamorphosis of songs from early versions to the versions that make the real album. I honestly would rather record in real studios and work with real producers/sounds engineers (like Positive Mental Trip did for all of the songs on the 2012 album “change your mind”) when I have to DIY albums at home Presonus studio One Pro gives me that freedom.”

You keep up to date with musical technology, what’s in your current studio set up?

My home studio is based around an iMac from 2011 – i7 processor, 32gb RAM. I have a MOTU interface, some Presonus monitors that I really like, a weighted AKAI controller that I’d like to replace with something that doesn’t rattle like a percussion instrument, and my ROLI seaboard, which has really captured my imagination. I mostly use software synths and sound sources these days, though there are plenty of guitars and percussion instruments here that I can use when the need arises. I use all kinds of software for music creation – Pro Tools, Studio One, Ableton Live, Melodyne… Whatever stimulates creativity is cool with me.

2 alternative and related items for PreSonus Studio One, curated by the Equipboard community.

Steinberg Cubase

$209.00 - $329.99

high-end alternative

Studio One was first written by Wolfgang Kundrus (an early developer for Cubase & the primary author/developer of Nuendo) & Matthias Juwan (the guy who wrote the VST3 spec) as part of KristalLabs Software Ltd (the "K" logo for Studio One is a tribute to them). PreSonus later bought them out & started releasing their product as Studio One.

Thus, Studio One & Cubase have a lot in common (e.g. shortcuts, UI/UX elements, etc)
